  • Patent number: 4845905
Abstract: A skylight, having a wing actuated by pneumatic springs, can be moved to an emergency opening position thereby substantially exposing the opening area of the skylight case. The skylight also acts as a residential ceiling or attic skylight which has, in the normal open position, a considerably smaller opening than in the emergency open position. A locking device is provided to restrict the long extension stroke of the piston rod of the pneumatic springs to a partial stroke. This partial stroke allows an opening which essentially corresponds to the standard opening of the wing in a residential skylight. The locking device, located on the cylinder of the pneumatic spring, includes a specially designed latch which, in order to effect partial stroke restriction of the piston rod, lockingly engages a stop located on the side of the case by means of a catch pin.

  • Patent number: 4833828
Abstract: A kennel door which pivots about a vertical axis that bisects the door. The door is mounted within an opening in a frame. Disposed along the periphery of the frame are door seals which provide both a stop against which the door comes to rest and a seal against weather coming in through the opening when the door is in a closed position. When the door is in a closed position, the door seals are situated on diametrically opposite sides of the door such that they permit the door to rotate in one direction through the opening but not in the other direction. A spring biases the door in a closed position resting against the door seals.

  • Patent number: 4776626
Abstract: A relatively uncomplicated hinge and spring assembly for effectively counterbalancing the trunk lid of an automotive vehicle and for partially opening that lid when it is unlatched. The assembly utilizes an adjustable tension coil spring that exerts a diminishing lifting force as the lid is raised and that, at the manufacturer's/user's option, is used to counterbalance or slightly exceed the gradually diminishing unsupported weight of the lid as it moves from lowered to raised position. The lifting force is augmented over a limited arc of the lid's travel, by lateral deflection or distortion of the spring, to urge the lid into its partially-raised position when it is unlatched.

A coil spring surrounds the sleeve in position to resist movement of one end of the sleeve against the spring force. Moving the rod axially relative to the spring in a direction against the spring force on the sleeve decreases the inner diameter of the sleeve to produce a drag on the inner member. Movement of the opposite end of the sleeve is limited by a stop. This causes the sleeve to expand and allows the rod to slip with a constant drag which is determined by the strength of the spring. With the spring force in position to be applied to only one end of the sleeve, movement of the inner member in the opposite direction provides only a minimal drag as determined by the initial frictional interference between the sleeve and the inner member. Positioning the spring to resist movement of either end of the sleeve, provides a constant drag on the inner member with either direction of movement of the rod relative to the sleeve.

  • Patent number: 4534132
Abstract: A rectangular frame set into the concrete surround at the head of a shaft supports one or more slab doors that are hinged to the frame. Adjacent each hinge line brackets fixed to the frame support a fixed spindle upon which a helical spring is secured. The spring has an extending limb at one end that bears against the under surface of the door. The other end of the spring is engaged with a winding bushing rotatable on the fixed spindle, and the bushing has a hollow hub for accepting a detachable winder so that the spring may be pretorqued to the proper loading to raise the door from its horizontal closed position to a substantially vertical attitude for access to the shaft or other opening. The frame defines a drip trough to collect moisture passing the door edges and when two doors are used a channel extending along the butt line of the doors collects water passing between the adjacent edges of the doors.

  • Patent number: 4481737
Abstract: A pivoting gate (10) is disclosed which has a rectangular gate frame (11) which is rotated about a horizontal axis by a gate operator (12) from a horizontal closed position to a vertical open position. The torque about the pivot axis is counterbalanced by an opening tension spring (28) when the center of gravity of the gate frame (11) is over the closed position of the gate, and is counterbalanced by one or more closing tension springs (22) when the center of gravity is past the pivot axis and is over the open position of the gate. The closing tension springs (22) are connected to the gate frame at one end and are so attached to the gate operator at their other ends that they will slide freely while the gate is opening but will be held to stretch and apply a counterbalancing torque to the gate frame when its center of gravity is past the pivot axis.

Abstract: A first gear is fixedly connected to the rotary shaft of a swingably mounted lid, and is engaged with a second gear which is rotatably mounted on a stationary member. The second gear is biased by means of a spring in such a direction that the lid tends to swing open, while a ratchet portion having a recess is provided at a peripheral portion thereof. A pawl is arranged to engage with the recess to stop the rotation of the second gear, and is arranged to disengage with the recess to release the second gear when intended to open the lid. A brake member is interposed between the stationary member and the second gear to prevent the lid from rapid opening. The pawl may be manually disengaged from the recess by depressing a push-button operatively connected thereto. Such a push-button may be omitted if the shape of the recess is arranged to easily disengage from the pawl when the lid is pulled manually.
