  • Patent number: 9816232
Abstract: Collecting data includes generating a sensor signal from each of a plurality of sensors located on a sensing roll, wherein each signal is generated when each sensor enters a region of a nip between the sensing roll and mating roll during each rotation of the sensing roll; wherein a web of material travels through the nip and a continuous band contacts a region of the web of material upstream from or at the nip. A periodically occurring starting reference is generated associated with each rotation of the continuous band and the signal generated by each sensor is received so that the one of the plurality of sensors which generated this signal is determined and one of a plurality of tracking segments associated with the continuous band is identified. The signal is stored to associate the respective sensor signal with the identified one tracking segment.

  • Patent number: 9540769
Abstract: Multiple groups of sensors are circumferentially spaced apart at each cross-directional position along a sensing roll of a nip press to measure and cancel or nearly cancel the effects of rotational variability which may be acting on the sensing roll. The strategically-placed sensors are designed to measure the pressure being placed against the web that is being advanced through the nip press. The average of the measurements of multiple sensors spaced circumferential apart provides a good cancellation of any rotational variability that might be found at a cross-directional position on the sensing roll. In this manner, a more true measurement of the nip pressure profile can be obtained and better adjustments made to reduce nip pressure profile variability. In addition, the nip variability profile may be used as a predictor of cover or bearing failures, resonant frequencies and other roll anomalies.

Abstract: A system for measuring the dynamic pressure distribution between rolls in a nip roll press comprises a roll adapted to rotatingly contact at least one other roll in a press nip, having one or more sensors thereon, for measuring the nip pressure at several locations along the roll length, wherein the measurements obtained by the sensors are transmitted to a computer and a display, to provide tabular, numerical and graphical representations of the pressure at one or more locations on the roll. Optionally a control system may be incorporated in the system for determining the pressure distribution along the roll and initiating corrective measures. The system of the instant invention can further measure temperature variations, if desired, as thermal sensors can be used on the sensing roll, or a computerized correlation scheme can relate sensor readings to temperature as well as pressure.

Abstract: An automatic paper feeding apparatus is designed to separate and feed originals by means of a separation pad and a feeding roller. A pressure sensitive conductive rubber is used for the separation pad to convert a change in thickness of an original into an electrical signal, thereby detecting a conveyed state, e.g., a multiple paper-conveying error, of the original.

  • Patent number: 5458324
Abstract: It is an object of this invention to allow detection of multiple paper-conveying of an original sheet in image reading or forming operation and facilitate a recovery operation. An automatic original feeding apparatus of this invention uses pressure sensitive conductive rubber in a feeding roller, and changes in length and thickness of a sheet are changed into electrical signals, so that the conveyed state such as multiple paper-conveying of the sheet can be detected.

  • Patent number: 5397290
Abstract: A heated calender roll at a predetermined operating temperature has a roll body having a cylindrical outer surface centered on an axis and formed radially inward from the surface with at least one axially extending passage, a pair of hub elements axially flanking and joined to the roll body, and at least one electrical heating element in the passage. A mass of heat-conducting metal in the passage has an outer surface bonded to but distinct from the roll body and an inner surface bonded to but distinct from the heating element. The metal has a melting point in excess of the operating temperature of the roll. The calender roll can be formed with a plurality of such passages each receiving a respective such electrical heating element and a respective mass of the heat-conducting metal. Alternately it can be formed with a single such passage receiving a plurality of such electrical heating elements and the mass of the heat-conducting metal.

  • Patent number: 5318430
Abstract: A calender for producing packing sheets, in particular packing sheets reinforced with synthetic fiber, has a large diameter heated cylinder, on which a packing sheet is formed and vulcanized, rotatably supported by spaced calender stands and driven by a direct current motor. An unheated cylinder of smaller diameter also driven by a direct current motor, is supported by the calender stands for rotation and for movement toward and away from the heated cylinder and is hydraulically pressed toward the heated cylinder as a pressure roller. The circumferential speed of each of the cylinders is sensed by a pick-up activated by uniformly spaced marks on the circumference of the cylinder and the thickness of the packing sheet on the heated cylinder is sensed by sensing the position of the shaft of the pressure roller.

  • Patent number: 5286245
Abstract: A flexure compensated roll comprising a rotatable roll shell around a longitudinally extending support therethrough. A longitudinally extending press shoe supported on the support. A piston movably supported on the support above a sealed pressure space. The piston has a saddle toward the interior of the roll casing. The shoe has a middle pressure chamber fluid connected with the pressure space of the piston. The shoe also has rows of hydrostatic pockets on both circumferential sides of the middle chamber. These are supplied by narrowed choke passages with hydraulic fluid. The supply of hydraulic fluid to the hydrostatic pockets bypasses the piston pressure space and/or the middle chamber and is from a pressure source to the hydrostatic pockets without pressure regulation. A regulating valve controls the force between the longitudinal support and the casing of the roll by setting the pressure in the middle chamber and by setting the pressure in the piston pressure space.
