Patent number: 9540769Abstract: Multiple groups of sensors are circumferentially spaced apart at each cross-directional position along a sensing roll of a nip press to measure and cancel or nearly cancel the effects of rotational variability which may be acting on the sensing roll. The strategically-placed sensors are designed to measure the pressure being placed against the web that is being advanced through the nip press. The average of the measurements of multiple sensors spaced circumferential apart provides a good cancellation of any rotational variability that might be found at a cross-directional position on the sensing roll. In this manner, a more true measurement of the nip pressure profile can be obtained and better adjustments made to reduce nip pressure profile variability. In addition, the nip variability profile may be used as a predictor of cover or bearing failures, resonant frequencies and other roll anomalies.Type: GrantFiled: March 11, 2013Date of Patent: January 10, 2017Inventor: Kerry D. Patent number: 5286245Abstract: A flexure compensated roll comprising a rotatable roll shell around a longitudinally extending support therethrough. A longitudinally extending press shoe supported on the support. A piston movably supported on the support above a sealed pressure space. The piston has a saddle toward the interior of the roll casing. The shoe has a middle pressure chamber fluid connected with the pressure space of the piston. The shoe also has rows of hydrostatic pockets on both circumferential sides of the middle chamber. These are supplied by narrowed choke passages with hydraulic fluid. The supply of hydraulic fluid to the hydrostatic pockets bypasses the piston pressure space and/or the middle chamber and is from a pressure source to the hydrostatic pockets without pressure regulation. A regulating valve controls the force between the longitudinal support and the casing of the roll by setting the pressure in the middle chamber and by setting the pressure in the piston pressure space.Type: GrantFiled: September 23, 1992Date of Patent: February 15, 1994Assignee: J.M. Patent number: 5242361Abstract: A self-loading controlled deflection roll for forming a controlled pressure nip with another roll along a nip line with a hollow rotatable roll shell rotatable on an axis and a roll shaft extending through the shell and radially supporting the shell along the nip line with axially facing surfaces on the shaft and rollers rolling on said surfaces supported on the rotating roll shell accommodating bending of the roll shaft relative to the roll shell fixing their relative axial positions. One roller is axially fixed and the other roller is mounted on a rocker arm loaded with the piston and cylinder.Type: GrantFiled: November 17, 1992Date of Patent: September 7, 1993Assignee: Beloit Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Dale A.
