  • Patent number: 5967957
Abstract: A roller assembly includes a rotating hollow roller and a non-rotatable crosshead longitudinally traversing the hollow roller. The hollow roller is supported by supporting elements acting against the inner circumference of the hollow roller. Each supporting element has a hydrostatic bearing pocket, whose extension in the longitudinal direction of the roller is at least three times that in its circumferential direction. This prevents the hollow roller from deforming and prevents edge pressure from being exerted on the web surrounding the bearing pocket.

A high velocity oxygen fueled gun is aligned with the undulated surface and a coating material is sprayed onto the surface from the gun to form a hardened coating having substantially uniform surface characteristics. The coating material is a tungsten carbide-cobalt material, or other hard carbide or oxide materials, which is sprayed onto the surface in a direction which is parallel to and offset from a plane passing through the longitudinal center of the roll. During the spraying operation, the gun is traversed along the length of the roll while the roll is rotated.

  • Patent number: 5566451
Abstract: A method for providing a tubular roll mantle of a roll for a paper machine or equivalent with glide bearings and a roll including glide-bearings. The roll mantle is supported on a stationary roll axle by hydraulic glide-bearing members acting upon the roll mantle or upon the roll ends. The bearing members are loaded hydraulically by a pressure medium. The roll mantle is supported on the roll axle by at least one pair of glide-bearing members which acting radially and/or axially in opposite directions. When an outside force that shifts or attempts to shift the roll mantle in the direction transverse to the main loading direction and/or in the axial direction is applied to the roll mantle, the pressure in the glide-bearing member placed at the side of the higher loading is adjusted to a level higher than the pressure in the glide-bearing member acting in the opposite direction so that the outside forces are neutralized.

Abstract: A composite idler roller has an integral internal bearing surface which interfits with the outer or tread portion of the roller. Flange seals or internal lubricant retaining grooves may be incorporated in the bearing surface. The outer or tread portion of the roller is inserted in a mold concentric with a core pin. The bearing material is injected into the space between the outer portion and the core pin. The centering of the outer portion may be by external contact with the mold or internal shoulder contact with the core pin. The core pin may be wholly or partly collapsible. The roller may have a wide variety of tread styles and may be stud or yoke mounted. In another form, the entire roller is formed of the bearing material.

  • Patent number: 5535670
Abstract: A cantileverable roll for use in a roll press, wherein the cantileverable roll cooperates with a backing roll. The cantileverable roll has a rotating surface and is either a solid rotatable roll body or a stationary roll body with a rotatable shell around it. A journal at each end of the cantileverable roll is supported in a respective bearing bracket. At one end of the roll, preferably the drive end, there is a non-rotating extension piece which extends out axially from the roll body and is fastened to the bearing bracket at that end. A tension bar or the like connects the extension piece to a stationary structural part and introduces force in the roll body which compensates for the weight of the roll when the other end of the roll is temporarily unsupported and the roll is cantilevered. The backing roll may also be cantilevered. The various techniques for supporting the one end of the roll by using the coupling element from the extension piece to the frame of the paper making machine are disclosed.

  • Patent number: 5534117
Abstract: A hydraulic crown support system employs a stationary cross head mounted within a cylinder or beneath an extended nip shoe. Individual hydraulic pistons are disposed along the stationary cross head, which, under the force of hydraulic pressure, support the inner wall of a roll or an extended nip shoe. The displacement of the support cylinders is controlled through one or more adjustable ports formed in the sidewall of the hydraulic cylinder or cylinders which support the roll or extended nip shoe. With a piston which extends from one end of the stationary cross head to the other, some tilting from one side to the other of the cross head can be achieved by the adjustment of the pressure ports, thus compensating for misalignment in the vertical direction between an extended nip or crown-controlled roll.
