Abstract: When rolling steel sheet and other rolled stock, rattling occurs in certain operating states. This results in reduced quality of the rolled stock and rejects as well as damage to the rolling mill. No improvement was achieved by placing brakes on the cylinders. Electronic monitoring is not a satisfying solution. Given that rattling is a self-starting oscillation, resistance sensors are coupled to the cylinders and/or the rolled stock in order to stabilize the self-starting oscillation modes, modes with negative damping, by means of additional damping. In the example illustrated in FIG. 4, cylinder-shaped, rotating dampers are coupled to the working cylinders. Concentric or disc-shaped layers made of steel and plastic such as those found in layered oscillation absorbers are most effective and adaptable. • Patent number: 5984847
Abstract: A controlled deflection roll has a roll shell which is hydrostatically radially supported by internally disposed hydrostatic shoes. In order to axially position the roll shell, a mechanical locating link is provided which is disposed externally of the roll shell. The link is coupled at one end to an element attached to the roll shell, and is coupled at an opposite end to a fixed support, such as a floor stand. The end of the roll at which the locating link is disposed is thus axially fixed, while the opposite end of the roll remains free to float. The locating link can be connected to an oscillator to oscillate the roll shell axially during operation so as to distribute any non-uniformities in the roll shell and thus to mitigate their effect on the sheet.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for controlling a deflection roll for compressing a web of material includes a shaft and a hollow roll disposed around the shaft. The hollow roll includes a working surface where the hollow roll is engageable with a hard roll along an entire length of the working surface. At least two bearing devices are disposed within the roll and are substantially aligned with the working surface of said roll. Each bearing device has a predetermined positive bearing clearance facilitating displacement of each outer contact surface relative to a respective inner contact surface of each bearing. The deflection roll further includes a mechanism for displacing the working surface of the roll with a fluid where the displacing mechanism is disposed external to the bearing devices.

Abstract: An adjustable deflection roll including a roll sleeve or jacket supported by a plurality of support devices positioned partially within a support beam. Pressure chambers may be located between the support devices and the support beam and each pressure chamber may be coupled to a supply line. As the length of the roll increases, and as the need for increasingly more precise pressure distributions also increases, more support devices may be utilized. The adjustable deflection roll may also include a drain channel to facilitate quick relief of the pressure chambers when necessary. To accomplish this, each pressure chamber may be coupled to the drain channel furnished with the supply line such that the drain channel may be closed with a drain valve.

The hollow roller is supported by supporting elements acting against the inner circumference of the hollow roller. Each supporting element has a hydrostatic bearing pocket, whose extension in the longitudinal direction of the roller is at least three times that in its circumferential direction. This prevents the hollow roller from deforming and prevents edge pressure from being exerted on the web surrounding the bearing pocket.
