  • Patent number: 9254578
Abstract: A system for processing a line of material along a path and a tear-assist apparatus. The tear-assist comprising a driving portion that drives the line of material along the path, a sensing unit that detects pulling of the line of material in a first direction along the path away from the driving portion, and a cutting member for cutting the line of material. The sensing unit can be associated with the driving portion such that upon detecting movement of the line in the first direction, the sensing unit causes the driving portion to drive the line of material in a second direction along the path for drawing the line of material against the cutting member to cut the line of material. In another configuration, when the sensing unit detects the movement in the first direction, the sensing unit can cause the driving portion to, drive the line of material in the second direction sufficiently for severing the portion of the line of material.

  • Patent number: 9039590
Abstract: Systems, devices, and methods are described for providing a bag having an internally reinforced header. A reinforcing material is combined with a bag material to provide strength to the reinforced header. The reinforcing material and the bag material are aligned during manufacturing such that the reinforcing material is positioned in a header area of a bag formed by folding the bag material. A seal that passes through both the reinforcing material and the bag material retains the reinforcing material within the bag header. A bag handle may then be punched into the header through the bag material and the reinforcing material.

Abstract: A method and apparatus that produces shaped and laminate articles and recovers the excess material or flash as a part of the manufacturing process. The apparatus uses a combination of rotary die and anvil roller assemblies in successive multiple stations to cut and separate each raw material into final product portions and recyclable flash portions as each raw material enters the apparatus. The apparatus separately reclaims each raw material flash portion and delivers the flash of each material in a recyclable form to an auxiliary recycling operation. In recovering the flash, the apparatus does not adversely affect the speed or quality of production of the final shaped or laminated product. Abstract: A method and apparatus for formation of a preformed bonded pull tab over a reseal liner is disclosed. The pull tab seal layer of material is bonded together with a reseal liner layer of material for insertion into a closure. The pull tab on the pull tab liner seal is formed prior to combination of the two layers and is folded backwards between the two layers of material. Thus, after combining the two layers, punching out the closure liner and insertion into the closure, the reseal liner is separated from the pull tab seal and the pull tab seal is adhered to the rim of the container. Only one punch press step is required for forming the closure and container seals and insertion of the members into the closure. A mechanism is provided for selectively moving the rotating members between the first and second positions to permit easy threading of the stock material during loading of the machine.

Abstract: A device is provided to join the lower end of a strip of paper coming from a nearly-empty reel to the upper end of another strip of paper coming from a full reel. The joining device comprises a rotating striking arm equipped with a hammer on one of its ends and with a cam on the other end. When the join between two strips is to be made, a jack actuates a castor which butts against the cam, thus bringing a striking surface of the hammer closer to the strips to compress and join the strips. The device further comprises a front and a rear cutting fixture permitting the remaining ends of the strips of paper to be cut on either side of the join. Air bearings are provided to guide one or both strips.

Abstract: The source materials are supplied in continuous strips of cardboard situated initially in separated planes laterally offset from each other. Longitudinal grooves are made along the strips, dividing them into longitudinal bands. The strips are overlapped and glued under pressure to join them together. Once glued they are cut into pieces. The pieces constitute the folded dividers, made up of sections and folded and glued sections which form the union between the sections of each strip. Optionally, narrower sections are glued directly onto the sides of a box, or to sheets glued in their turn to the sides of the box. The upper edges of the divider can be straight or present recesses. The divider formed by strips glued by the sections which make up sections at right angles to the strips is folded and unfolded at the same time as the box into which it is fitted.

Abstract: A method of manufacturing a container for the temporary storage of foods is disclosed. The container includes a corrugated medium having a single backer paper thus creating an exposed corrugated surface on a side opposite the backer. The food container is formed such that the exposed corrugation is located towards an interior surface of the container. The method of manufacture involves fabrication of a single-face sheet of corrugated material to which is affixed a tape liner along opposed side edges of the sheet. A wider tape is affixed to the sheet intermediate the lateral edge tapes. The sheet is then cut along a longitudinal midline of the intermediate tape and also across the sheet to form discrete blanks. The blanks are substantially single-face corrugated material but have double-face corrugated material along the lateral edges where the tape was applied. Thereafter, the blank may be further cut, scored and folded to form containers having a single-face,bottom panel and double-face side walls.
