  • Patent number: 5383835
Abstract: A gas barrier folding carton formed from a unitary paperboard blank (10) having a gas impermeable polymer layer (52) such as EVOH, nylon, or foil extruded on or laminated to one surface of the blank, except for certain adhesive (56, 58) coated areas. Two opposite side edges of the blank are seamed to form a flattened tube (13) having top and bottom closure flaps (30, 34, 36, 38, 40). One of the major closure flaps (36) at each top and bottom container end is provided with spaced abhesive areas (58), with areas of the two minor closure flaps (34, 38) also provided with abhesive (56). Upon folding the closure flaps at each end, the folding sequence pulls the barrier film (52) away from the abhesive (56, 58) areas and subsequent heat sealing produces hermetic sealing of the carton. This process and carton construction may be employed with conventional gas purging of the container interior by an inert gas before final sealing.

  • Patent number: 5236408
Abstract: A paper box folding and sealing machine for forming a hemmed edge. A skiving station removes a portion of a carton blank material at the area to be hemmed. A hemming station folds the skived portion onto the blank, irons it and then opens the hem to lie in a predetermined plane that intersects the plane of the blank. Superheated air directed in a laminar-like air flow, activates a thermoplastic coating adjacent the skived portion of the area to be hemmed. Folding fingers, tack rollers and presser rollers then fold the skived portion onto the activated thermoplastic coating to form a hem that is sealed against the adjacent portion of the blank.

  • Patent number: 5156584
Abstract: A container assembly which is especially adaptable to form a final presentation enclosure is constructed from a flat blank of material. The flat blank is provided with a plurality of fold lines forming a bottom wall, side walls, and top wall portions which act in conjunction with one another to enclose a space. The side walls are connected by joining portions constituting bellows-type folding members. The container is constructed in accordance with the normal hand movements of a person assembling it, wherein the joining members are initially easily folded inwardly thereby drawing up the respective side walls to which they are attached. The natural grasping movement of the hands is then used to complete assembly. The container does not utilize tabs, glue or other fastening means normally associated with a variety of containers. The top walls are formed so as to be exposed at the top of the container to allow securing of the top wall portions by any suitable means.

  • Patent number: 4950218
Abstract: The invention relates to a multiple pot comprising individual pots interconnected by connector portions so as to be capable of being pulled out. The multiple pot is used to raise and transplant seedlings of plants. The invention also relates to a method of fabricating the pot. The pot is designed especially to promote growth of roots across the side walls of the individual pots after transplantation. Also, the resistance encountered when the multiple pot is unfolded is reduced. Further, the individual pots are uniform in size. These feature arise from the facts that the connector portions are formed by applying a waterproof paste discontinuously and that a water-soluble paste is not applied around the edges of the individual pots created when the multiple pot is unfolded. Hence, a coating of the paste is formed in none of these portions. The multiple pot is fabricated by continuously carrying out three steps.

  • Patent number: 4642086
Abstract: There is provided an improved apparatus for forming foldable box blanks from a thermoplastic sheet by forming flexible fold lines in the thermoplastic sheet, with the apparatus including a plurality of scoring tools and a flat plate having a plurality of grooves formed therein opposite to the scoring tools. In addition, the apparatus includes means for heating the scoring tools to less than the melting temperature of the thermoplastic sheet. In this manner, when the heated scoring tools engage the thermoplastic sheet, it is deformed on its upper surface by the scoring tools and on its lower surface by the grooves in the grooved plate to form a plastic sheet having the desired flexible fold lines.

  • Patent number: 4631046
Abstract: A folded paperboard tray suitable for cooking food products contained in the tray in a microwave oven has an interior surface which is coated with a styrene methyl methacrylate copolymer to prevent liquid seepage from the food product through the paperboard. The tray has a peripheral flange formed thereon which is connected to the remainder of the tray by means of a cut score fold line. The use of the cut score fold line prevents the copolymer coating on the tray from tearing away from the edges of the tray when the edges are cut from a stock sheet of coated paperboard.

Abstract: Prefold, web scoring apparatus for signature folding machines or the like comprises mating first and second web scoring rollers, each scoring roller having alternating scoring blade and resilient roller portions. The scoring rollers are mounted, preferably on existing, rotatably driven nip roll shafts, upstream of a first web folding stage in which the web is cut into sheets and the sheets are transversely folded, the folded sheets being fed therefrom to a second web folding stage for folding at right angles to the first stage fold. Arc lengths of each of the scoring roller blade and resilient roller portions is equal in length to the second stage fold line. The scoring rollers, between which the web is advanced, are positioned and oriented on their mounting shafts so as to score the web in alternating directions corresponding to the direction of folding of each paper layer in the second folding stage.

  • Patent number: 4341524
Abstract: The invention relates to a working head for a so called passepartout-machine by means of which rectangular cuttings and/or impressions can be made in a plain material and which is formed with a knife (6) or an impression roller which is mounted in a holder (30) which is connected to a rotatable housing (5) for being lifted and lowered. A pressure roller (7) adapted to be in contact with the plain material is likewise connected to the rotatable housing (5) for being lifted and lowered. The rotatable housing (5) is fixed connected to a central shaft (2) at the upper end of which a Maltese cross (14) is mounted and which by engagement with a cam disc (9) having a pin (10) and provided on a driving shaft (1) for the Maltese cross (14) can be rotated intermittently, so that the central shaft (2) is rotated one forth of a turn when the driving shaft (1) is rotated a full turn. The Maltese cross (14) has recesses (16 ) for a movable locking wedge (34) which locks the central shaft (2) after the rotation.
