  • Patent number: 8647246
Abstract: The present invention discloses a sealing system for sealing together at least a pair of flexible pouch material layers. The sealing station can have a first sealing bar, a second sealing bar and a drive system that is in contact with the first sealing bar. The drive system is operable to move the first sealing bar between an open position and a closed position such that the first sealing bar can apply a predefined pressure on the flexible pouch material layers when positioned or located between the sealing bars. A pressure sensor is also included and in communication with the drive system, the pressure sensor operable to detect if the drive system applies less or too much pressure than the predefined pressure on the flexible pouch material layers located between the first and second sealing bars.

  • Patent number: 6526733
Abstract: The invention relates to a device for aligning a packing material tube (1) with a treatment station in a packaging machine in which a tube (1) with a circular cross-section is produced from a strip of printed packaging material having embossed lines. Said tube is closed by longitudinally sealing it, filled and shaped in a cross-sealing unit (12) and divided into cuboid packages. The unit (12) is provided with an adjustable lift of stroke so that it intermittently convey the tube (1). It is also provided on diametrical sides with a folding flap (16) that can be pivoted about an axis (15). For feeling the position mark, a sensor is arranged. The aim of the invention is to facilitate a faster termination of the initial phase when the packaging machine is put into operation while at the same time producing less cuttings and to prevent the paper tube from being damaged. To this end, a folding finger (19) is arranged upstream of every folding flap (16).

  • Patent number: 5699653
Abstract: A pouch machine forms a series of pouches in a continuous web of pouch material by folding the web and then forming spaced side seals to define a pouch closed on three sides with an initially unsealed mouth on top. The pouch is opened to its maximum volume prior to filling by pressurizing the pouch. Pressurization is achieved by introducing a curtain of compressed air under a plate and passing the mouths of the pouches adjacent the plate and thus through the air curtain. The air curtain is preferably at least as wide as the mouth so the entire mouth is subjected to the air pressure, thereby causing the pouch to inflate to its maximum volume. Continuous web height control is provided to assure alignment of the web with the plate. A lip at the mouth may be formed by folding one edge of the pouch over prior to creation of the side seals. After filling the lip is folded back up prior to top sealing to make a balanced pouch.

  • Patent number: 5315807
Abstract: A vacuum means for detecting transverse seal areas dividing unsealed areas in adjacent plies of a moving, multiple ply web includes vacuum ports defining a gap through which the web moves. Unsealed web areas are sucked against the ports. When a sealed area enters the gap, it is sucked to one or the other port, uncovering the opposite port. The ensuing pressure differential is sensed to indicate a seal entering or passing the gap. Seal signals are produced and used to control accurate cutting at the seals to separate the web into individual pouches. Control and circuitry apparatus and methods are disclosed.

  • Patent number: 5142846
Abstract: A bag detection apparatus (50) for sensing the position and seam integrity of a deformable bag (24) and bag transfer apparatus (53) for gripping and maintaining positive control of the edges (25) of the bag (24) during transfer from a bag filling station to a bag closure station. The bag positioning and seam integrity detecting apparatus (50) includes pneumatic conduits (60-67) mounted on the bag distending assembly (23) of a bag filling apparatus (20) and coupled to pressure switches (68). A controller (101), monitoring increases in pressure at each pressure switch (68), determines the position and condition of the mounted bag (24). The transfer apparatus (52) includes a pair of elongated arms (80) having hook-shaped gripping fingers (82) formed to engage and cooperate with clamping members (83) to grip the bag proximate the upper edge (25). A bag detection method also is provided.

  • Patent number: 5097653
Abstract: A verification system for detecting the presence and absence of an object includes a verification station. A preselected number of objects is delivered to the verification station with each object disposed at a selected position. A pneumatic comparator is located at each selected position. Each pneumatic comparator comprises a head directed toward its corresponding selected position. The head includes an exit port and an entry port whereby air may be discharged through the exit port and directed toward the selected position. If an object is located at the selected position the air is reflected back into the entry port where it is sensed to indicate the presence of the object.

  • Patent number: 4577451
Abstract: Device for detecting the presence or the absence of an article in the recesses of the feeding disc of a wrapping machine for candies, comprising a nozzle emitting an air jet directed against the portion of said disc carrying the recesses. Opposite to the nozzle emitting the air jet, there is provided a target member which is operatively connected, through a mechanical connection or equivalent means, to an electrical sensor located in a protective housing. If a recess which cyclically moves across the air jet contains an article, the latter intercepts the air jet so that the target member and sensor will be left at rest. If a recess does not contain an article, the air jet will impinge against and cause the displacement of the target so as to change the status of the sensor.

  • Patent number: 4486186
Abstract: The trailing end of a running tow of filamentary filter material in a filter rod making machine is spliced to the leader of a fresh tow, and the splice is held at a preselected location ahead of the first tow treating station in the machine. An optoelectric or pressure-responsive detector generates a signal when the splice advances beyond such location on expiry of the running tow, i.e., when the second tow begins to advance through the machine. The signal is used to reduce the speed of the prime mover of the machine during travel of the splice therethrough, to increase the width of passages which are defined for the tow by the banding, spreading, stretching, plasticizer-applying and/or other units for the tow so that the splice can readily advance therethrough, and/or to effect automatic segregation of those filter rod sections which contain portions of the splice.
