Abstract: A centrifugal separator (10) for an engine includes a rotor (30) mounted within a housing (12, 14) for rotation on hollow spindle (42) to the end of which oil is supplied at high pressure to enter the rotor. To prevent the rotor from flying from the base and oil spraying if the cover (14) is removed without shutting off the oil supply via optional valve (80), a rotor restraint (90) is provided in the form of a ring (91) which surrounds and overlies a flange of the rotor. The ring may be complete or discontinuous and may also include an interlock to prevent attachment of the cover and/or supply of oil if the ring is not in place.

  • Patent number: 6736768
Abstract: A centrifugal separation device separates a composite fluid, such as blood, into the components thereof. The fluid is delivered to a fluid receiving area in a rotor from which area the fluid travels through a radial inlet channel having an inlet channel height to a proximal end of a circumferential fluid separation channel. Near a distal end of the separation channel, fluid components travel into distinct first and second outlet channels. The height of the first channel is greater than the height of the more distal second channel. The inlet channel height is greater than the height of the first channel. The rotor may be balanced by axially symmetrical sets of inlet channels, separation channels and outlet channels or by a balance channel connected to the separation channel but displaced from the outlet channels.

Abstract: A system and method for vibration in a centrifuge is disclosed. A centrifuge for removing more dense material from a fluid medium includes a fluid separation wall placed within a non-rotating sleeve. The fluid separation wall rotates around the axis of rotation and includes an inner surface and an outer surface with at least one receptacle formed on the inner surface of the fluid separation wall. The receptacle aids in separation of more dense material from the fluid medium by forming a void space between the inner and outer surface. An excitation apparatus associated with the receptacle to create a vibration within the receptacle. A flow path may extend through the wall from the void area to the outer surface to transport more dense material to the containment zone.

  • Patent number: 6599229
Abstract: A centrifuge assembly for processing a flow of oil so as to separate out particulate matter includes a centrifuge, a housing base, and a flow-control piston which is assembled into the housing base. The centrifuge includes a housing which defines a hollow interior with a centrifugal separator positioned within the hollow interior for separation of particulate matter from the flow of oil. The housing base defines an incoming oil conduit, a drain conduit, an air-in passageway, and air-out passageway. The flow-control piston is movable between a normally-closed position and an open position in response to incoming oil pressure. When in the closed position, neither oil nor air are able to flow into the centrifuge assembly. In the open position, both oil and air are able to flow into the centrifuge assembly. The air which is introduced is under pressure and provides air-assisted drainage of the oil from the centrifuge housing back to sump.
