Patent number: 7867159Abstract: A centrifugal method, and corresponding system, for processing blood to collect platelet rich plasma. A separation chamber is filled with blood from a fill syringe by rotating the separation chamber at a fill rotation rate and pumping the blood from the fill syringe. A soft spin is used to initially separate red blood cells from platelets by spinning the separation chamber at a soft spin rate. A percentage of the blood is drawn from the separation chamber back into the fill syringe to remove separated red blood cells. A second portion of the separated blood is drawn from the separation chamber until a red blood cell/platelet interface is detected. A hard spin is performed by spinning the separation chamber at a higher rate and connecting tubing is cleared of red blood cells by drawing a predetermined clearing volume. The platelet rich plasma is then collected in the collection syringe.Type: GrantFiled: June 4, 2007Date of Patent: January 11, 2011Assignee: Arteriocyte Medical Systems, Inc.Inventors: Victor D. Publication number: 20020061807Abstract: A float is used for preparing a density gradient in a parallel-walled vessel. The float has an outer peripheral surface that has a diameter smaller than an inner diameter of an inner surface of the vessel. With the float placed inside the vessel a liquid is introduced onto the float such that the liquid flows around the float between the float and the inner wall of the vessel. The shape and configuration of the float slows the velocity of the liquid such that there is only laminar flow as the liquid contacts other liquid below the float. Elimination of turbulent flow prevents mixing of different liquid introduced into the same vessel thereby forming layers of fluid. Preferably, the vessel is a centrifuge tube. In one embodiment, the outer diameter of the float is large enough to cause capillary action between the float and the inner surface of the centrifuge tube to force liquid to remain between the float and the inner surface of the centrifuge tube.Type: ApplicationFiled: January 11, 2002Publication date: May 23, 2002Inventor: Norman G. Patent number: 5156818Abstract: Hazardous radioactive waste is compacted and cast into safely handled monolithic castings having a radiation barrier wall completely enclosing the radioactive waste by centrifugal casting processes in which the barrier wall may be either a pre-formed shell transported to the jobsite or it may be formed by biaxial centrifugal casting and curing of the barrier wall in a mold. When a pre-formed shell is used, means are provided for thickening the radiation barrier if necessary by biaxial casting of additional barrier material inside of the shell. Castable radioactive material is cast inside the barrier wall before removal of the casting mold from the finished cast monolith. The cast monolith is supported for rotation as the mold is removed therefrom so that additional impact resisting and radiation barrier material can also easily be applied to the exterior surface monolith if radiation leakage exceeds tolerance levels.Type: GrantFiled: June 19, 1991Date of Patent: October 20, 1992Assignee: Alternative Technologies for Waste, Inc.Inventors: Frank Manchak, Jr., Frank Manchak, III

Patent number: 5067938Abstract: In a centrifugal separator which has in the top panel of its case an opening communicating with a rotor chamber and a control panel disposed behind the opening, a lid for covering the opening has a cutaway made in its lower portion for receiving the control panel and the pivot of the lid is extended laterally to the rear of the control panel. The lid is spring biased toward its open position and is opened by depression of a foot pedal that is connected to a lid lock mechanism. The control panel includes an indicator of rotor rotational frequency and rotor chamber temperature, the indicator being supplied with electrical signals produced by sensors within the case of the centrifugal separator.Type: GrantFiled: March 18, 1988Date of Patent: November 26, 1991Assignee: Kabushiki Kaisha Kubota SeisakushoInventors: Tadahiro Uchida, Kuniyuki Shimamura, Hayabu Nogawa, Keikichi Saito, Minoru Hara

Patent number: 5062826Abstract: The invention provides a device for locking the base of a blood centrifugation cell on a rotatable generally disc shaped chuck plate. The chuck plate encloses a plurality of elastic locators which extend radially a slight distance from the periphery of the plate. The plate further encloses a plurality of locking means which are biased to remain within the dimensions of the plate at rest and which are radially extendable by centrifugal force to extend beyond the periphery of the plate. An annular locking ring engages the base of the cell and extends around the periphery of the chuck plate. The locking ring has a plurality of internal recesses for initially receiving the elastic locators, and the locking means during centrifugation to secure the cell to the chuck plate.Type: GrantFiled: July 6, 1990Date of Patent: November 5, 1991Inventors: Marco Mantovani, Giorgio Rossetto

Patent number: 5043103Abstract: A casting containing toxic waste is made by centrifugally casting toxic waste in a pre-formed cage having heat conducting means therein. The casting is formed with suitable shielding materials selected as a function of the waste being cast. The finished casting contains passageways through which heat is removed. These passageways are oriented such that when two or more castings are stacked in abutment, the passageways of adjacent castings interconnect.Type: GrantFiled: March 23, 1989Date of Patent: August 27, 1991Inventors: Frank Manchak, Jr., Frank E. Patent number: 5024647Abstract: The invention is directed to a centrifugal contactor for solvent extraction systems. The centrifugal contactor is provided with an annular vertically oriented mixing chamber between the rotor housing and the rotor for mixing process liquids such as the aqueous and organic phases of the solvent extraction process used for nuclear fuel reprocessing. A set of stationary helically disposed vanes carried by the housing is in the lower region of the mixing chamber at a location below the process-liquid inlets for the purpose of urging the liquids in an upward direction toward the inlets and enhancing the mixing of the liquids and mass transfer between the liquids. The upper region of the mixing vessel above the inlets for the process liquids is also provided with a set helically disposed vanes carried by the housing for urging the process liquids in a downward direction when the liquid flow rates through the inlets are relatively high and the liquids contact the vane set in the upper region.Type: GrantFiled: June 13, 1989Date of Patent: June 18, 1991Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the United States Department of EnergyInventors: Robert T.
