Abstract: The present disclosure is directed to a modular floor unit and method of making same. The module is made up of a plurality of lengths of tongue and groove strip flooring having a flat smooth finish on one side and a plurality of channel recesses on the other side. The tongue and groove strips are all of the same length and have the tongue of one strip full into the groove of an adjacent strip. The unfinished side is glued to a plywood back the grain of which is at a right angle to the length of the strips. After gluing the plywood is stapled to the back of the strips.
Abstract: A slab or block for making a floor comprises a plurality of tiles placed side by side and bonded face to face to a plate of plastic material. Heat insulating shavings such as vulcanized elastomer or wood shavings are dispersed in the plastic matrix of the plate. A textile backing such as a woven textile scrim or net is bonded to the second face of the plate.
Abstract: A steel bridge deck surfaced with plastic tiles is disclosed in which the tiles are bonded to the deck by means of a bonding layer having a Shore 00 hardness of from 78 to 90 and comprising an elastomer compounded with a stiffening filler in an amount equal to at least half the weight of the elastomer. Low volatile liquid plasticizer is present in an amount to provide the stated hardness. The elastomer is preferably a mixture of acrylic elastomer and butyl elastomers, and the stiffening filler is a high abrasion furnace carbon black. The tiles are adhered to the layer with a solution coating comprising neoprene in admixture with a terpene-phenolic resin and the coating desirably includes a hydrophobic silica. The layer is adhered to the steel deck with a butyl-based solution coating containing a corrosion-resistant pigment in combination with zinc oxide.
Abstract: A wood floor panel is disclosed comprising a plurality of substantially identical individual panel sections having bevels cut in their undersurface at the edges thereof such that when the sections are abutted together the bevel cuts of abutting sections form an adhesive well along which an adhesive bead is applied to fasten and hold the individual sections together. The panel may optionally be provided with tongues and grooves, each of which is cut along the entire length of a respective side edge thereof. Panels of various sizes can be formed using identical bevel cut panel sections which are merely arranged in the panel shape and size desired and fastened by the adhesive beads.
Abstract: A resiliently cushioned adhesive applied restricted growth bridging wood flooring system is provided. The wood floor members are held in place by spaced ridges of elastomeric cushioning adhesive material between the wood flooring members and the supporting base. The elastomeric cushioning adhesive material has sufficient gripping and tensile strength to overcome normal horizontal and vertical expansive buckling forces which can be generated by an increased moisture content within the wood flooring members during periods of normal atmospheric moisture changes. The elastomeric cushioning adhesive material also provides substantial resilient cushioned support under the wood flooring members, absorbs impact sounds between floors of multistory buildings, and provides a substantially level floor even though the supporting base may be non-planar.
Abstract: A wall hanging having a variable picture made of a multitude of interchangeable tiles which snap-fit onto a specially configured picture support assembly. A frame decoratively surrounds and contains the tiles. Each of the tiles has an eccentric image or eccentric geometric pattern thereon and can be rotated on a peg to various positions to attain a variety of pictures. Even more pictures can be obtained when different patterned tiles are exchanged with each other. In one embodiment, the tiles and pegs are rectangular and the pegs have a concave corner to facilitate removal of the tiles. In another embodiment, the faces of the tiles are circular and rotate upon cylindrical pegs. The tiles can also be transparent with window-like pockets that receive reversible decorative members.
Abstract: A carpet installation for use with a frangible panel to assist in the disintegration and breakup of the panel permitting ventilation through an aircraft floor. The carpet installation utilizes positioning and hold-down tiles to reduce adhesive contact with the frangible panel and isolators to limit the support for the panel and increase the shear forces on the panel during breakup of the panel.
Abstract: A method for providing a reference face on the bond beam of a swimming pool during its construction is described. The reference face is then used to secure a tile band around the inner periphery of the pool at the water line. An elongated form board made of expanded plastic foam is positioned against the bond beam at the location at which the reference face is desired, and a line conforming to the contour desired for the reference face is scribed along the board's upper surface. A knife is then used to cut into the form board along the scribed line to define a surface in the form board conforming to the configuration desired for the reference face. The form board has a slit extending along its length from the side face positioned against the bond beam to its interior. When the bond beam is cut from its upper surface to form the desired surface, it is cut to a depth meeting the slit so that a section of the board between the bond beam and the desired surface is removable.
Abstract: Architectural or decorative pavement having thin decorative pavers or "tiles" made of or selected from known materials, from metal and impregnated wood to natural stone to clay or cementitious tiles, are bonded to the upper surface of a sand and cement (and latex, if desired) setting bed before the bed takes its initial set. "Thin" pavers are less than 1/4 inches thick. Stronger materials in these pavers lend themselves to minimum thickness in small to medium sizes. Thin pavers of weaker materials require maximum thickness in large to medium sizes. The pavers are placed in rows and designs as may be pleasing with adjacent side edges spaced apart and forming gaps all around the perimeter of each paver. While the bed and bond are both green, vertical cuts are made through and below the gaps and through the bond coat and appreciably into the setting bed all around the whole perimeter of each paver. The setting beds are supported on appropriate bases or other supporting means.
Abstract: Fired ceramic tiles having a rear surface which is provided with a series of fine ribs but is otherwise substantially planar are attachable to a wall or similar surface, without the need to apply a fixative to the surface, by reason of a plurality of bodies of adhesive material distributed over the rear surface of the tile body and projecting therefrom to a thickness of 0.75 to 1mm., the adhesive being a pressure-sensitive adhesive and being of such a nature that it will retain its coherent form both prior to and after mounting of the tile and will not flow or spread appreciably, each body of adhesive extending over a plurality of said ribs which are embedded therein, having a flat outer surface and being spaced from adjacent bodies of adhesive and from the edges of the tile body, and the adhesive material being protected by a peel-off film.
Abstract: A pedestal mountable structural panel is formed by lamination of a series of wraps about a core. A sawtooth arrangement of the junctions of corresponding laminar members of consecutive wraps provides an attractive, sturdy assembly without the use of braces. Additionally, the laminar arrangement of the wraps renders the panel readily adaptable for pedestal mounting on legs formed by a laminar arrangement of elongated members, also without the use of braces.
Abstract: A floor for roller skating or other sports activities and the like consists of extruded metal deck sections of a required length which are placed side-by-side on an even solid surface. Juxtaposed plastic tiles or plates are laid down on the deck sections and are provided on their bottoms with press studs which interlock with continuous channels or grooves formed in the deck sections. Each plastic tile or plate engages at least a pair of the underlying deck sections and thus the tiles serve to secure adjacent deck sections in assembled relationship in the formation of a continuous floor.
Abstract: A new and improved grouting composition for impervious tile is provided which comprises not less than 50 per cent by weight of an inert filler aggregate which shall be graded with not more than 10 per cent passing a number 140 sieve and none retained on a number 6 sieve and an AFS Grain Fineness Number less than 100, but greater than 30; a water-resistant polymer emulsion having a solids content of at least 40 per cent and providing 7 to 15 per cent by weight of polymeric solids; volatile components from 5 to 15 per cent by weight and 10 to 35 per cent by weight of fine fillers which shall have an average particle size less than 140 mesh. In addition, a method for grouting impervious tiles employing such composition is also provided.
