  • Patent number: 8875469
Abstract: A sleeve for protecting from deterioration and anchoring an embedded end of a post in the ground. The sleeve, molded from unperforated, resilient material, conforms to the exterior post dimensions and extends for at least the desired embedment distance. One or more inwardly projecting notches are cut into the post. The sleeve includes one or more reversible snap domes molded into the sleeve at locations coinciding with the post notches. The snap domes flex to an outwardly concave position as the post is being inserted into the sleeve and then snap to an inwardly concave position once the post is fully installed and the snap domes align with the notches. The inward concavity of the snap domes extends into and engages the post notches to prevent the sleeve from being removed from the post. When embedded into the ground, backfill material prevents the snap dome from being deflected into the outward concavity position, thus anchoring both post and sleeve in the ground.

Abstract: An improved mounting structure for the posts of hand rail systems including a mounting arm member positioned within a sleeve monolithically formed within the inner chamber of the post. The sleeve includes a slit that allows for the outflow of water, thereby limiting corrosion and degrading of the post and mounting structure. A series of nubbed projections create grooves within the surface of the sleeve, to secure the mounting arm into the sleeve in a strong manner. A secure fit limits the amount of liquid trapped within the sleeve reducing corrosion. The mounting arm has smaller dimensions, reducing the chances that the arm comes into contact with support rods embedded within the concrete during installation. By avoiding contact with the support rods, concrete spalling is dramatically reduced, adding to the lifetime of the rail system.

Abstract: A method for securing a building to a foundation provides hold-down units that perform double-duty by acting as a compressive load on a floor immediately therebelow due to the force of a seat or base portion thereof. Meanwhile, a flange portion of each hold-down device extends upward to fasten to the upright members in an upper floor applying tension thereto. Thus, an anchoring rod extending through multiple floors of the shear walls may reduce the number of total hold-down devices by an amount approaching half that otherwise required. Likewise, the number of more expensive, automatic, take-up devices used is reduced by approximately half.

Abstract: A method of forming an exterior wall of a building, including the finished wall, includes the steps of mounting a cementitious, fiber-reinforced panel to the wall, such as the studs thereof, and then applying cementitious mortar to the panel. The cementitious mortar can be stucco, which is typically painted, or a base to which masonry units, such as stones or bricks, are mounted. The preferred panel is a glass fiber reinforced concrete panel.

Abstract: A multi-level fall protection system for a structure under construction, the structure having reinforced concrete decks including a first deck and a second deck arranged above the first deck and openings provided in the decks. The system includes bearing plates arranged in an associated opening in the first deck and having a flange portion larger than the associated opening. Lateral support blocks are arranged in an associated opening in the second deck. Vertical support posts are detachably secured at a bottom portion to an associated bearing plate and extend upwardly through an associated opening in the second deck. The vertical support posts are supported laterally by the lateral support blocks. At least one flexible support line extends between and is coupled to a pair of the vertical support posts.

  • Patent number: 7337591
Abstract: A structural forming assembly comprises wall molding panels for forming laterally spaced, opposed molding surfaces that define a wall mold cavity for forming a wall structure. The wall panels are vertically disposed and laterally spaced to provide the molding surfaces along opposed sides of the wall mold cavity. Reinforcement rod suspending grid elements attached to the opposed wall forming panels are for freely positioning and retaining horizontally and freely disposed reinforcement rods at a preselected horizontal location spaced inwardly from each opposed molding surface within the mold cavity, and at spaced preselected vertical locations between the molding surfaces. The rod suspending elements are effective to retain reinforcement rods in place at the preselected horizontal and vertical locations while the hardenable material is being poured into an upwardly directed top mold opening and allowed to harden within the wall mold cavity.

Abstract: An engineered 2?×8? equivalent board is formed from a standard wood 2?×4? board. The 2?×4? board is bifurcated longitudinally to form opposed rails, and a longitudinal ½?×½? groove is formed centrally of the cut face of each rail. Three ½? thick OSB web pieces of predetermined length and width are cut and glued and stapled into the rail grooves. This produces a finished board dimensionally equivalent to a standard 2?×8? board that has gaps between the rails that enable conventional plumbing pipes, electrical wiring, HVAC ducting, and insulation to pass laterally through the board when used as a stud.

  • Patent number: 7114296
Abstract: A system and method for securing an insulated concrete wall form to a bracing structure such as a scaffolding frame to keep the form straight and plumb during construction. The system uses anchoring and tensioning members, which may be formed as pieces separate or integrally as a single piece to hold the bracing structure against insulated panels of the insulated concrete wall form. Openings may be cut through the insulated panels to provide a pathway for the tensioning member. The anchoring member is positioned against an inner face of the insulated panel. A portion of the anchoring member or the tensioning member extends into the wall form concrete receiving space to fix the system in place once the concrete sets. The tensioning member may be disposed through one of the openings, around the bracing structure and through the other opening and around the anchor member to maintain the tension. Alternatively, the tensioning member may be disposed through an interface between upper and lower wall form blocks.

  • Patent number: 6955016
Abstract: A self-supporting shearwall structure in the form of an “H,” an “I,” or a “C” is disclosed. The shearwall structure provides vertical and lateral support to the framework of a multi-story building sufficient to support the roof, other exterior and/or interior walls, and intermediate floor loads of the building, as well as the wind load of the building. In the preferred embodiment, the wall structure is made primarily of reinforced concrete, preferably comprising pre-cast concrete panels. The panels are placed end to end on their edge on the first (or lowest) floor of the building and joined to the building's foundation and to at least one other horizontally adjoining panel. The structure is made higher by adding an additional row of panels horizontally aligned at vertical support points and placed on their edge on top of the row of panels that has already been formed such that each subsequent row of panels is supported on and grouted to the prior row.
