  • Patent number: 6729607
Abstract: A cable release anchor having an improved breakaway post design with a cable release feature. The cable release anchor includes upper and lower anchor portions that are readily separable from one another during an impact. A bearing plate is retained within the end of each of the upper and lower anchor portions, and each bearing plate has a bearing surface that is oriented at an acute angle with the vertical when installed in the ground. Each of these bearing plates contains a U-shaped cutout. When the upper and lower anchor portions are joined, the cutouts form an opening through which an end of the tension cable is disposed. An impact to the upper anchor portion readily releases the upper post section from the lower post section and frees the cable. The cable release anchor provides positive anchorage to react to tensile loads on a rail member to redirect a vehicle impacting along the length of the terminal or guardrail.

Abstract: A breakaway post base includes a pair of adjacent slip plates to allow separation of the upper portion of a traffic sign or the like from its permanently mounted base. The two plates are triangular with notches at their apices, with the plates and related structure secured together by bolts through the apex notches. An impact on the upper post dislodges the bolts, allowing the upper post to move freely and preventing significant damage to the sign structure. At least one of the slip base plates includes a sleeve extending therefrom, into which one end of the post is installed. The post is prevented from rotating relative to the slip base by a series of set screws installed through the slip base sleeve and locking the post immovably therein. • Patent number: 6457895
Abstract: The flush mount breakaway post coupler is a coupler for connecting a post to a ground anchor. The coupler has an upper section and a lower section. The upper section has a socket for receiving a post, a shear section, and an anchor attachment portion for attachment to the lower section. The shear section is hollow and cylindrical and has an groove defined about its exterior so that the wall of the shear section is thin, fracture of the coupler occurring around the annular groove. The lower section is an expansion anchor having a threaded bore for receiving a bolt, the lower section being placed in a tubular ground anchor, or a hole defined in the ground. The socket has a bottom wall, and a cylindrical bore extends through the shear section to a predetermined base in the anchor attachment portion. A bolt hole extends from the base of the bore through the anchor attachment section. A bolt connects the upper and lower sections so that the coupler is wedged into the tubular ground anchor as the bolt is tightened.

Abstract: A retaining wall block that includes three textured outer face surfaces and can be divided into a pair of sub-blocks of different sizes that are configured to be compatible with each other for use in the construction of a retaining wall having a random appearance. The retaining wall block has three textured outer face surfaces of varying lengths and when the retaining wall block is separated into its sub-blocks, each of the sub-blocks define two additional textured face surfaces of different lengths. The main retaining wall block is capable of creating individual wall blocks having one of six different face surface lengths.

  • Patent number: 6422783
Abstract: A slip base support system for tubular posts. The post supporting a highway sign or other highway roadside device is held in a casting that has a triangular, multi-directional base plate. The base plate mates with a similar shaped ground plate, and the two plates are held together with bolts oriented in notches in the apexes of each triangle. Upon impact by a vehicle, the post and support casting break away from the ground plate by ejecting one or more of the bolts laterally from the notches. The post is held within the casting after impact by an internal locking pin, which is retained within the post by grommets, thus minimizing the projectile missiles after impact. To facilitate breakaway, two sheets of galvanized steel having a low coefficient of friction are positioned between the base plate and ground plate. After impact, nearly all parts of the system, including the post, casting, ground plate and bolts, are able to be re-used.

  • Patent number: 6401406
Abstract: Disclosed is a retainment system for concrete block inspection port coverplates. The retainment device is formed from a hook-shaped engagement shaft that is positionable around rebar through an inspection opening. A proximal end of the engagement shaft protrudes from the concrete block opening and is available for placement through an inspection opening coverplate. Either a U-shaped locking nut can be used to secure the coverplate to the engagement shaft, or the coverplate itself includes integrated annular grooves as a locking mechanism. The device provides for simplistic covering of any standard inspection opening, and the use of transparent plates providing an uninhibited view of the rebar presence and condition, even when the retainment device is mounted. The use of annular grooves placed perpendicular to the length of the shaft, allow for ease of shaft disengagement from the wall upon curing of the cement, providing a flush surface to either be left exposed or for placement of stucco thereon.

  • Patent number: 6382583
Abstract: A safety device may be used to provide separation in the event of a side impact collision. The device may be used in a utility pole guy wire system, interposed between the guy wire and the ground anchor. The device operates in bending. A lateral force of sufficient magnitude applied to the device by the errant vehicle causes a rod within the device to break in tension, even though the tensile strength of the rod may be greater than that of the guy wire. In operation, certain massive portions of the device are tied safely to the ground, while other portions are pulled over the moving vehicle by the tension of the guy wire. The invention may be designed to tolerate axial loads, but to fail reliably when a side force exceeds a desired threshold. When installed in series with a utility pole guy wire, the invention will withstand all normal tensile and incidental loads, and will release when subjected to a high side force as from an automobile impact.

Abstract: A fibrous insulation blanket is pre-cut for custom fitting the insulation blanket into wall, floor, ceiling and roof cavities of different widths formed by the framework of a building. The insulation blanket has one or more pairs of longitudinally extending cuts in the major surfaces of the blanket. Each pair of cut(s) leaves a separable connector within the blanket between adjacent sections of the insulation blanket whereby the blanket can be handled as a unit for insulating a cavity having a width about equal to the width of the blanket or easily separated or torn apart by hand at a separable connector for insulating a cavity having a lesser width.
