  • Patent number: 6939899
Abstract: An eyeglass lens forming composition containing light absorbing compounds which may undergo light initiated polymerization is provided. Typically, lens forming compositions that absorb light do not permit enough activating radiation to penetrate into the depths of the lens cavity to adequately initiate polymerization of the lens forming composition. An embodiment of the invention provides a system and method for curing such a lens forming composition to form a lens that does not transmit ultraviolet light. Activating light is used having a wavelength greater than the wavelengths of light which the light absorbing compounds absorb. The power of the formed lenses may be controlled by varying the lens forming conditions. Additionally, the lens forming process may be controlled using a microprocessor based control system.

  • Patent number: 6756417
Abstract: Dental bonding compositions and methods for promoting adhesion of an amalgam-based restorative material to a dental substrate. The inventive compositions include one or more polymerizable resins that are able to adhere to a dental substrate when at least partially polymerized, one or more polymerization photoinitiators in an amount so as to result in partial polymerization of the resin when the compositions are irradiated with radiant energy, and one or more chemical initiators (e.g., benzoyl peroxide) that cause further polymerization of the resin when the composition is contacted with an amalgam restorative. A bonding composition applied to a dental substrate and irradiated with radiant energy is more polymerized in a region adjacent to the dental substrate, while a less polymerized inhibition layer forms in the region of the surface. Packing an uncured amalgam into the dental preparation mechanically disrupts the inhibition layer so as to form peaks, troughs and other irregularities.

Abstract: A pultrusion apparatus for manufacturing a fiber-reinforced plastic article having a non-linear shape includes a mold configured to receive a partially cured fiber-reinforced plastic article and to form the partially-cured fiber-reinforced plastic article into a spirally wound shape. A drive mechanism is coupled to the mold and configured to rotate the mold such that the fiber-reinforced plastic article is taken up on the mold. An energy source is operatively associated with the mold and positioned so that the partially cured fiber-reinforced plastic article is cured in a spirally wound shape as the article is taken up on the longitudinally extending mold. The pultrusion apparatus allows for continuously shaping a non-linear fiber-reinforced plastic article, obviating the need for any of the work to be done by hand, which may be labor intensive, not as highly reproducible, and potentially contaminating.
