Abstract: Various processes and methods are disclosed for incorporating polyvinyl alcohol additives into products. In one embodiment, polyvinyl alcohol particles are dissolved in a solvent without the use of external heat to form a polyvinyl alcohol solution for incorporation into a product. In an alternative embodiment, polyvinyl alcohol particles are directly incorporated into a starch-based adhesive composition. Through the processes of the present disclosure, solid polyvinyl alcohol particles can be delivered directly to a manufacturing facility where the product that incorporates the polyvinyl alcohol additive is being made or formulated. In this manner, since the polyvinyl alcohol particles are not predissolved, the costs associated with shipping and transporting the polyvinyl alcohol product are greatly reduced.

Abstract: The present invention relates to dispersants such as superplasticizers for hydratable cementitious compositions, and more particularly to methods for achieving variable degrees of longer slump life in concrete and mortar without loss of stability. This is achieved by using two admixture systems. The first admixture composition has multi-components for achieving initial-slump-enhancement, later-slump-retention, and limiting initial slump. The second admixture composition has the later-slump-enhancing component. Alternatively, conventional water reducers or superplasticizers can be employed initially, followed by the later-slump-enhancing admixture composition.

Abstract: The invention is directed to amphipathic polymeric particles that serve as both the dispersant and the binder in water based inks, ink compositions containing these particles, and methods for making the particles. The polymeric particles contain both hydrophilic and hydrophobic moieties with a pre-determined structure, and have an average diameter of 50 to 500 nm. The amphipathic polymeric particles may be prepared by a side-chain conversion method or a polymerization process involving an ATRP step, with or without a cross-linking agent. This invention improves the stability of polymer and inks by both ionic and steric stabilization of the suspended polymer particles.

Abstract: The invention concerns well dispersible powders on the basis of carboxylated copolymers containing butadiene made of styrene and/or acrylonitrile, whose films taken from redispersion show good tensile strength. According to the invention, the latices are sprayed with mixtures of spraying aids consisting of 1 to 15 weight % of a salt of the alkylated di-phenyl-ether-di-sulphonic acid, caseinate and/or N-alkyl sulphosuccinamide and/or with 1 to 20 weight % of a di- or tetra sodium or potassium salt of an addition product from N-alkyl sulphosuccinamates with maleic acid mixed together with polyvinyl alcohol. The dispersions can be used especially in the construction industry and they offer an alternative to copolymers on the basis of polyvinyl acetates and acrylates.

Abstract: A suspending agent-containing slurry is disclosed which comprises a dispersant and a particulate suspending agent having a particle size distribution in which the particle diameter at weight-cumulative 95%, from the minimum particle size, is 1 &mgr;m or smaller. A method for efficiently producing the suspending agent-containing slurry is also disclosed. A process for suspension polymerization by use of the suspending agent-containing slurry is further disclosed. The slurry not only has such an excellent suspending ability in suspension polymerization that it enables the production of vinyl polymer beads having a narrow bead size distribution, but also is capable of retaining this ability over long and of exhibiting the same ability even when it has a high concentration. The suspension polymerization process enables vinyl polymer beads having a narrow bead size distribution to be produced efficiently due to the use of the slurry.

Abstract: The present invention provides a jet ink composition suitable for application onto a substrate comprising an ink carrier, a colorant, a polyol, an aldehyde-based cross-linking agent, and a catalyst that promotes a reaction between the cross-linking agent, the polyol, and the substrate. The present invention further provides a process of jet ink printing onto a substrate comprising projecting a stream of ink droplets to said substrate, controlling the direction of the droplets so that the droplets form the desired printed image on the substrate, and heating the image to obtain a cured printed image. Examples of preferred cross-linking agents are modified melamine formaldehyde resin and modified urea formaldehyde resin. The substrates preferably possess carboxyl, hydroxyl, amide, or sulfhydryl groups. An example of a preferred substrate is cellulose. The cross-linking reaction is carried out at relatively moderate temperatures and at high speeds.
