    Abstract: The invention disclosed herein relates to an improved process for making elastomeric polyisoprene articles. In particular, the process of the invention is a system which produces synthetic polyisoprene articles exhibiting tensile strength properties similar to that of solvent-based processes using natural rubber latex. The process comprises an accelerator composition at the pre-cure stage comprising a dithiocarbamate, a thiazole and a guanidine compound. In a preferred embodiment, the accelerator composition comprises zinc diethyldithiocarbamate (ZDEC), zinc 2-mercaptobenzothiazole (ZMBT) and diphenyl guanidine (DPG), in conjunction with a stabilizer, such as sodium caseinate. The invention also includes an elastomeric polyisoprene product made by the process, such as a surgeon's glove.

    Abstract: Modified soy protein adhesives are provided which have increased bonding abilities. The adhesives are prepared by forming a dispersion of soy protein, water, and a modifier selected from two classes of modifiers. The preferred modifiers are urea, sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate, sodium dodecyl sulfate, and guanidine hydrochloride. The resulting dispersion is stirred, freeze-dried, and milled into a powder to be stored until use. The adhesives of the invention have superior bonding qualities while being safe for the environment. The urea-modified, GH-modified, SDS-modified, and SDBS-modified soy protein adhesives have higher water resistance than non-modified soy protein adhesives.

    Abstract: An aqueous outside release agent for the production of tires and other rubber articles is described, which contains 5 to 35% by wt. diatomaceous earth, 0.5 to 6% by wt. pyrogenic hydrophobic silica, 0.1 to 2% by wt. nonionic surfactant, 0.2 to 3% by wt. of a binder, 0.1 to 3% by wt. dye, 0 to 5% by wt. ethyl alcohol and the remainder water. Preferred binders are styrene-maleic acid or styrene-maleic anhydride copolymers and in particular ammonium salts thereof. Said outside release agent is used in processes for molding and vulcanizing tires and other rubber articles, it being sprayed onto the blank with the aid of air-atomizing guns before molding and vulcanization are carried out. A very good release effect is thereby achieved without vulcanization being impaired. As only very small quantities of outside release agent are needed, cleaning of the press mold and hence interruption of the production process are required very much less frequently than when conventional outside release agents are used.

    Abstract: An adhesive or coating formulation useful in biomedical application and particularly well suited for use in aqueous environments is provided comprising:(1) a bioadhesive polyphenolic protein component having from about 5 to about 99 weight percent of a proteinaceous substance comprising from about 10 to about 400 of the following repeating decapeptide unit: ##STR1## in which each X is hydrogen or hydroxyl and each R is hydrogen or methyl; (2) from about 1.0 to about 40 weight percent of a cross-linking agent which promotes cross-linking of the decapeptide;(3) one or more additives which promote the desired properties of the formulation, said additives comprising at least one surfactant and being present in an amount of from 0% to about 90% by weight, and(4) a filler compatible with the intended use of the formulation, said filler being present in an amount of from 0% to about 50% by weight.

    Abstract: A polymeric or plastic pigment, useful as a partial replacement for the inorganic pigment conventionally employed in paper coating compositions is disclosed. The pigment comprises a copolymer of an animal or vegetable protein and a monomer havingh a glass transition temperature (Tg) greater than about 70.degree. C. polymerized in a surfactant free system. When employed in paper coating compositions the pigment provides a coating of improved gloss and ink holdout, as compared to a coating in which the pigment composition consists only of an inorganic material. Improved water resistance, improved water holding and a potential for reduction in the coating sticking to the calender during the paper finishing process are obtained as compared to conventional polymeric pigments.

The method comprises the utilization of a composition for coating the material in order to form a water-repellent protective coating thereon. Preferably the coating includes a preserving agent, having substantial antimicrobial acitivity. Further, in some instances the coating may include an adhesive forming constituent, enabling outer layers of material to become tightly bound in the stack, bale or pile of material being treated. When the latter adhesive compositions are utilized, the treated material tends to retain its physical integrity, against loose portions becoming detached therefrom. Also disclosed are preferred compositions for achieving the methods of treatment, and also preferred methods for preparing certain of the preferred compositions.

In this process, polyisocyanates or aqueous dispersions thereof are added while stirring to aqueous solutions or mixtures of starch and flour.The extender-containing adhesive systems are aqueous glue dispersions having increased service life which in their preferred embodiment contain about 15 to 30% by weight of polyisocyanates, preferably polyphenyl-polymethylene polyisocyanate (PMDI), 10 to 15% by weight of starch which is soluble in cold water and 14 to 25% by weight of (cereal) flour and optionally, other additives and the appropriate quantity of water adding up to 100% by weight.
