Abstract: Curable compositions capable of giving a cured article excellent in weatherability and flam retardancy. (1) One of the curable compositions comprises an organic polymer having at least one crosslinkable hydrolysable silyl group and phyllosilicate. It has enhanced weatherability due to incorporation of the phyllosilicate, and has further enhanced weatherability because the bleeding of an ultraviolet absober and a light stabilizer is inhibited. (2) The other composition comprises 100 parts by weight of a urethane resin, epoxy resin, and/or modified polysulfide resin and 0.1 to 100 parts of weight of a phyllosilicate. It has enhanced weatherability due to incorporation of phyllosilicate, and has further enhanced weatherability because the bleeding of an ultraviolet absorber and a light stabilizer is inhibited.
Abstract: A sealing-enhancing coating for a gasket or a portion of a gasket includes flaky particles of chemically exfoliated vermiculite, at least 90% by weight of the particles having a thickness of no more than 30 microns, and no dimension greater than 1 mm. The particles form 10 to 90 wt. % of the coating. The coating also includes 50 to 10 wt. % of an organic polymer binder which when formed into a film 1 mm or less in thickness and heated to 300° C. in free air for 24 hours either does not decompose or decomposes leaving a residue of at least 20% by weight of film.

Abstract: A polypropylene nanocomposite composition having at least the following two elements. The first element is a maleated polypropylene polymer having a weight average molecular weight greater than 100,000. Abstract: The invention provides intimate physical mixtures of macrocyclic polyester oligomer (MPO) and filler, as well as methods for their preparation and use. Improved dispersion of filler in a polymer matrix is achieved upon polymerization, and larger amounts of filler with high aspect ratio can be used. Abstract: A high temperature resistive coating composition includes a pigmenting component, a binder component, and a hardening agent. Abstract: Disclosed is a product and process for a substantially halogen-free thermoplastic elastomer. The thermoplastic elastomer can be incorporated into a decorative surface covering as a binder with the addition of an optional filler. The substantially halogen-free thermoplastic comprises the combination of a dynamically vulcanized blend of epoxidized natural rubber (ENR), ionomers and a diluent polymer such as ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA). Abstract: A nanocomposite made with an inorganic layered material and a star-shaped polystyrene that can be blended with normal linear polystyrene is disclosed. The inorganic layered material can have an exfoliated structure, substantially exfoliated, or intercalated structure. The exfoliated structure can result in significantly improved physical properties, even with only a very low content of clay. The invention is also directed to a process that can be used to make the compositions of the present invention. In one embodiment, a physical mixture of clay and star polymer is prepared and then the mixture is heated for several hours, preferably under high-shear mixing, to increase the rate of exfoliation, after which mostly inexpensive commodity linear polystyrene polymer completes the composition.

Abstract: A method for making an article by cold compaction molding. The method comprises compacting a resin composition comprising high molecular weight and ultra high molecular weight polyethylene (HMW-PE and UHMW-PE, respectively) homopolymer, copolymer, and/or blend and an inorganic acid scavenger at a temperature below the softening temperature of the composition. An article prepared in accordance with the claimed method shows lower corrosion test data compared to articles prepared from virgin HMW-PE and UHMW-PE, and an improved cold compaction strength compared to articles prepared using resins containing metal soaps.
Abstract: A composite adhesive featuring a matrix phase that includes a cyanate ester and a filler or reinforcement phase that includes a plurality of bodies of at least one material comprising a high shear strength and/or high modulus material. Preferably, the filler also possesses at least one of high thermal conductivity and low coefficient of thermal expansion. Unlike certain commercially available cyanate esters, those of the instant invention substantially maintain or even increase in strength upon addition of the filler to the system. The instant composite adhesives may also display reduced coefficients of moisture expansion relative to the unfilled or “neat” resin. Such a composite adhesive is extremely useful for joining articles where high strength and minimal swelling in moist environments are required, such as in the precision equipment industry.

Abstract: Thermoplastic polymers, rubbery polymeric components and reinforcing fillers are mixed and heated to a range of 380° F. to 440° F. The resulting mixture is then fed into a Banbury mixer, with the resulting mixture fed into a diverter feeding two molds. The velocity of the piston of each mold being filled is controlled to thereby control the density of the molded product along its length. As each mold is filled, it is deposited in a cool water bath (50° F.-60° F.) while the next mold is being filled. Abstract: The present invention relates to a solvent-free pigmented formulation comprising
I) a binder based on at least one copolymer P in an aqueous polymer dispersion obtainable by free-radical aqueous emulsion polymerization of a monomer mixture containing
a) from 45 to 69.95% by weight of at least one monomer a) whose homopolymer has a glass transition temperature Tg of less than 20° C.,
b) from 30 to 54.95% by weight of at least one monomer b) whose homopolymer has a glass transition temperature Tg of more than 50° C.,
c) from 0.05 to 1.5% by weight of itaconic acid and/or its anhydride and/or its salts, as acidic monomer c), and
d) from 0 to 2% by weight of at least one further monomer d),
the sum of the % by weight of a) to d) being 100% by weight,
II) at least one pigment,
III) at least one pigment dispersant having an acid number to DIN 53402 of less than 600,
IV) if desired, an inorganic filler, and
V) customary auxiliaries.

Abstract: A single-liquid type adhesive composition contains a main agent, an imidazole serving as a hardener, and a hardening promoter for increased hardening speed. The imidazole has its surface covered by a thermoplastic resin, and the hardening promoter is provided by a modified imidazole composition with its imino group (—NH—) having the H replaced by a specific reaction retarder group.
