Abstract: A high strength, flexible crosslinked polyethylene (PEX) material is provided wherein the base polymer is intermixed with a polymer modifier which affects the amorphous region of the polymer, leaving the crystalline portion of the base polymer virtually unaffected. Consequently, the amorphous region's density is lowered, resulting in a more flexible final product, while the crosslinked molecular structure and/or crystalline portion of the polymer, which controls the strength of the base polymer, remains strong. The polymer modifier can comprise a hydrocarbon fluid such as PAO, Group III basestocks, or a gas-to-liquid hydrocarbon. A method for producing the plastic material is also provided. The plastic material has particular utility in the production of tubing, piping, and conduits for transporting gases, liquids, and the like, as well as wire and cable coatings such as jacketing and insulation.

  • Patent number: 7087660
Abstract: This invention relates to a process of preparation of components and articles of manufacture containing at least one of such components, such as tires, and the resulting prepared components and fabricated articles, by use of directed high frequency energy internally heated silica-rich rubber compositions which contain sulfur curative and a significant content of high softening point polymer, namely a polymer and/or elastomer having a melting point (Tm) and/or high glass transition temperature (Tg) above 0° C., and particularly above 30° C., and which contains a minimal, if any, carbon black reinforcement. Such directed high frequency energy heating is provided, individually, by directed radio frequency (electromagnetic) radiation and/or by directed microwave radiation.

  • Patent number: 7056971
Abstract: A thermoplastic elastomer (“TPE”) which is oxygen-permeable is provided with excellent barrier properties against oxygen by melt-blending with a liquid polyisobutene oil plasticizer in an amount insufficient to render the plasticized elastomer tacky. If made tacky, enough detackifier is used to allow the product to be formed into a removable seal. The TPE may be a conventional thermoplastic vulcanizate or a block copolymer of a vinylaromatic compound, typically styrene, and a conjugated diene, typically butadiene or isoprene, or mixtures thereof; the block may be a diblock, triblock or higher block, but the preferred polyblock copolymer is a triblock with styrene end-blocks and a butadiene/isoprene mid-block. Preferably the diene mid-block is hydrogenated to provide a poly(lower)monoolefin mid-block. When the TPE is a TPV, some or all of the mineral oil used to make the TPV processable may also be substituted with the polyisobutene plasticizer.
