  • Patent number: 6995206
Abstract: The present invention is drawn to a method of generating functionalized latex particulates in a colloidal suspension. The method can comprise steps of protecting functional groups present on polymerizable monomers with photo labile groups to form protected monomers; polymerizing the protected monomers to form a protected polymer; and exposing the protected polymer to a wavelength of light that removes the photo labile groups from the functional groups, thereby forming the functionalized latex particulates. These latex particulates can be used in a wide variety of applications, including in ink-jet ink printing applications.

Abstract: A two component, curable hot melt adhesive system includes a first hot melt adhesive formulation which has a softening temperature greater than room temperature and which includes a first component of a curable adhesive therein. The system includes a second hot melt adhesive formulation which has a softening temperature which is greater than room temperature and which includes a second component of a curable adhesive therein. The second component is reactive with the first component to provide a cured adhesive bond. In use, the two formulations are heated to a temperature above their softening temperature and are contacted so as to cause mixing. The mixture cools to provide a thermoplastic bond which subsequently cures to provide a permanent adhesive bond. While the first and the second component individually perform as hot melt adhesives, combining the first and the second gives enhanced adhesive performance in extended temperature ranges.

  • Patent number: 6576717
Abstract: Disclosed is a water-dispersible acrylic-modified polyester resin containing sulfonate groups prepared by addition copolymerization of ethylenically unsaturated vinyl monomers and a polyester. The polyester is prepared from a polycondensation reaction with dicarboxylic acids, glycols, ethylenically unsaturated monomer, and a minor amount of a sulfomonomer. The acrylic-modified polyester is prepared by first producing the polyester under polycondensation conditions followed by the addition polymerization of the ethylenically unsaturated vinyl monomers. The acrylic-modified polyesters can be formed into a coating composition that has zero or very little organic solvent and is very useful to produce crosslinked cured enamels having excellent gloss, hardness, impact resistance, and water resistance such as those used in automotive finishes, appliance, and coil coatings.
