  • Patent number: 6710127
Abstract: The invention relates to levelling agents for surface coatings having a weight-average molecular weight of from 5000 to 100,000. The levelling agent is a branched polymer comprising a free-radically or ionically polymerized base molecule into which macromonomeric units containing at one end a monomeric unit which has an ethylenically unsaturated bond and possessing a weight-average molecular weight of from 1000 to 30,000 have been incorporated by free-radical or ionic copolymerization, the weight fraction of the macromonomeric units, based on the total weight of the branched polymer, being from 1 to 60% by weight. The invention further relates to the use of appropriate polymers as levelling agents for coating formulations and to coating formulations comprising the levelling agents of the invention.

  • Patent number: 6656998
Abstract: Water-borne paints having an ASTM 60° gloss value of at least 10 are formulated with a latex of a copolymer of vinyl acetate and ethylene or alkyl acrylate having a dry glass transition temperature (Tg) below 20° C. and a latex of a polymer of vinyl acetate having a dry Tg above room temperature but a Tg when wet below 23° C. so that it is film-forming from the latex at room temperature. These paints are suitable for service as satin, semi-gloss or high gloss coatings but preferably are used as semi-gloss paints. The addition of the higher Tg polymer of vinyl acetate to the lower Tg copolymer provides a paint free with low to no volatile organic content but exhibiting improved blocking resistance without significant reduction in gloss.

  • Patent number: 6646085
Abstract: An ambient dry water dispersed coating composition substantially free of volatile organic coalescing solvents, the coating composition containing a polymer film forming binder comprises between 40% and 50% copolymerized non-conjugated, unsaturated fatty acid triglyceride, between 40% and 55% copolymerized ethylenic monomer including styrene, and between 3% and 12% copolymerized maleic anhydride. The film forming copolymer is produced by first reacting maleic anhydride with the fatty acid triglyceride at high temperatures between 140° C. to form a maleinized triglyceride having a pendent maleic anhydride structure. The maleinized triglyceride is then styrenated at temperatures between about 80° C. and 200° C. in the presence of at least 4% peroxide initiator based on the weight of monomers copolymerized to form a styrenated, maleinized fatty acid triglyceride copolymer having anhydride groups.
