  • Patent number: 5522974
Abstract: Described is a method of preparing polyacrylamide gel containing capillary tube wherein acrylamide is polymerized from a liquid to a gel within the tube, the improvement comprising the steps of: a) after the polymerization, annealing the gel inside the tube by cycling the gel/tube at least once in a temperature range from 20.degree. C. to a temperature not to exceed about 75.degree. C. and back to ambient; and b) recovering the stress released gel-filled tube. Preferably, the polymerization commences at the middle of the tube and commences toward the extremities of the tube.

  • Patent number: 5523335
Abstract: A flexible packaging printing ink is formulated from a resin binder (e.g. an alcohol soluble polyamide or a water-dispersible polyacrylate), pigment, solvent (e.g. a lower alkanol or water), and an alkyl polyglycoside surfactant. Related methods, compositions and articles are also provided. A method of preparing a polyamide resin by condensing a dibasic acid mixture with a diamine mixture and melt blending the resin with an alkyl polyglycoside is also provided. These polymers are particularly useful as the binder for a flexible packaging laminating ink composition.

  • Patent number: 5473005
Abstract: A water based thixotropic adhesive gel is disclosed which contains: water; polyvinyl alcohol, or wherein a portion of the polyvinyl alcohol is replaced with polyvinylpyrrolidone; xanthan gum to impart thixotropic properties to the gel; and a plasticizer for the polyvinyl alcohol. The gel has a thixotropic index which permits the viscosity of the adhesive to break down when a flexible tube or squeeze bottle dispenser is finger-pressed while having a sufficiently low viscosity to allow for easy extrusion from an orifice having a diameter of about 0.06 to 0.15 inches. When pressure is released, after the desired amount of adhesive has flown out of the dispenser, the adhesive quickly reverts to very close to its original gel state so that it does not run on a vertical surface of porous or semiporous material such as paper. Preferred gels contain a water soluble dye and are clear.

Abstract: The invention relates to a neutral nonionic latex comprising:(a) about 5 to about 70 weight percent of a nonionic polymer comprising polymerized free-radically polymerizable nonionic monomer, based upon the total weight of the neutral nonionic latex, wherein the free radically polymerizable nonionic monomer comprises:(i) about 90 to about 99 percent by weight of nonionic alkyl acrylate monomer; and(ii) about 1 to about 10 percent by weight of nonionic amide monomer; wherein the weight percentages of (i) and (ii) are based upon the total weight of (i) plus (ii);(b) about 30 to about 95 weight percent of an aqueous phase, based upon the total weight of the neutral nonionic latex; and(c) about 2 to about 10 weight percent of a nonionic emulsifier based upon the total weight of the nonionic polymer plus the nonionic emulsifier;wherein particles of the nonionic polymer are stabilized by the nonionic emulsifier and dispersed within the aqueous phase.
