Tar Or Pitch Patents (Class 524/66)
  • Patent number: 5578663
Abstract: A pavement rejuvenating and/or conditioning composition in which particular coal tar derivatives and other optional ingredients are supplemented with an elastomeric constituent. A rejuvenating or conditioning composition containing an elastomer will reliably hold in place a top layer of fine aggregate, whereas a rejuvenating or conditioning composition without elastomer does not, and also allows for early restoration of traffic, prompt resistance to rain, and good repair and wear resistance of and in the pavement to be maintained. The elastomer is preferably acrylonitrile-butadiene polymer although other polymers can also be substituted including natural and nitrile-rubbers, polyorganosiloxane and, less preferably, styrene-butadiene, neoprene- and polybutadiene polymers.

  • Patent number: 5552470
Abstract: A thermoplastic elastomer composition is provided which is highly durable and free from oxidative deterioration when exposed to elevated temperature as in molding and also ambient temperature at which an end product thereof is used. These advantageous features are attributable to the use of a hydrogenated oil of the class disclosed which serves effectively to suppress the tendency of an elastomer undergoing gelation or cross-linking particularly when heated in the atmosphere. The hydrogenated oil is derivable from hydrogenation of a liquid product resulting from thermally treating a coal tar or distillates thereof at above 400.degree. C.; a liquid product resulting from thermally treating at above 400.degree. C. a petroleum crude oil, distillates thereof, or a liquid hydrocarbon derived from catalytic cracking, hydrogenative cracking or catalytic reforming of petroleum distillates; or a thermally cracked tar resulting from thermally cracking a petroleum crude oil or distillates thereof.

The product produced therefrom is superior in some ways for applications such as pipe manufacture and meets generally accepted specifications therefor. Furthermore, such a product is less expensive than an ABS product without the coal tar pitch additive.

  • Patent number: 4332620
Abstract: A paving mixture containing black asphalt which is changed to a color other than black by the addition of a limited amount of a coloring agent to the mixture, such as ferric oxide, to impart a permanent, distinctive color to the pavement without sacrificing any of the wearing qualities thereof. At the same time, the cost of the pavement is maintained within practical economic limits so that it may be used in the production of paved areas of limited extent, such as tennis courts, playgrounds, running tracks, parking lots, airport runways, etc. When the mixture is laid down in depths of one-fourth inch to twelve inches, the increased cost of the pavement is made up in a reasonably short period of time by the elimination of the need for painting the conventional black surface repeatedly, especially when the latter is subjected to extensive use and wear.
