Abstract: A silicone release composition having a non-gloss, i.e., matte finished, surface and a linerless label incorporating the silicone release composition. The release composition includes a crosslinked silicone-based polymer having microparticles of a polymeric wax at least partially embedded therein. The polymeric wax may be polytetrafluoroethylene, polypropylene or other polyolefin, or a hydrocarbon-based wax. The microparticles of polymeric wax cause incidental light to scatter upon reflection, giving the release composition surface matte appearance. This makes the release composition particularly useful for linerless labels on which bar coded information will be printed. Also, a method for producing linerless label stock. The method includes mixing an uncured silicone material with microparticles of a polymeric wax. The mixture is coated onto a substrate and exposed to UV radiation to cure or crosslink the silicone around the microparticles of wax.

Abstract: This invention relates generally to sealants for insulating glass units. More specifically, this invention is a one-component, hot applied, chemically curing sealant for edge sealing insulating glass units. The sealant contains a thermoplastic hot melt resin blended with an atmospheric curing resin. The hot melt resin functions as the meltable component during the initial application, and supplies strength immediately upon cooling. The polymer phase then begins to cure by reaction with atmospheric oxygen and/or moisture to form a cross-linked thermoset elastomer which is temperature resistant. At this point, the hot melt resin functions as an inert plasticizer within the cured polymer phase. The sealant of the present invention may additionally include plasticizers, fillers, pigments, catalysts and the like.

Abstract: Rubber particles, to be used as fillers or extenders for various composite polymer systems, are chlorinated by a gas-solid phase reaction with a chlorine-containing gas. A composite polymer containing the chlorinated rubber fillers or extenders exhibits a higher flexural modulus than if prepared using an unchlorinated rubber filler or extender. Chlorination of the rubber particles is carried out by contacting the finely divided rubber particles with a chlorine-containing gas comprising at least about 5 volume percent chlorine. Advantageously, the chlorine can be diluted with air, nitrogen or other essentially inert gases and may contain minor amounts of fluorine. Improved performance is obtained with nitrogen dilution of the chlorine gas over air dilution. Improved polymer composite systems having higher flexural modulus result from the use of the chlorinated rubber particles as fillers instead of unchlorinated rubber particles.

  • Patent number: 5643998
Abstract: A recyclable polymer is formed of a plurality of oligomer units obtained by polymerizing a fixed number of monomers, and linkage units for linking the oligomer units through a chemical bond which is different from a bond between monomers constituting the oligomer units, thereby allowing repetitive scission and re-bonding of the linkage units by a predetermined treatment not cleaving the bond between monomers. The recyclable polymer is decomposable into oligomers and the oligomers can be linked again into the original polymer without degrading the quality of the polymer. A process for producing the recyclable polymer, a method for recovering the recyclable polymer, and a method for regenerating the recyclable polymer are also provided.

  • Patent number: 5637642
Abstract: This invention involved the discovery of novel polymers used as adhesives and a process for their preparation. The polymers were prepared by the nucleophilic substitution, at room temperature, of PVC with substituted alkyltrialkoxysilanes, which can be cured at room temperature to give adhesion of PVC to hydrophilic substrates. These polymers are particularly useful as adhesion promoters in ion-selective electrodes. The invention also involved the application of these adhesive primers to planar electrode substrates to give greatly improved performance in the response of ion-selective electrodes.
