Abstract: The rheological properties of a crosslinkable resin system are modified by the presence of a side chain crystalline (SCC) polymer (or a similar crystalline polymer which melts over a narrow temperature range). The polymer dissolves in the curable system at temperatures above the melting point of the crystalline polymer (Tp), but when the system is then cooled to a temperature below Tp, at least partially forms a separate phase in the curable system. Below Tp, this separate phase substantially increases the viscosity of the curable system (i.e. makes it thicker than the same system without the crystalline polymer). This is particularly valuable for sheet molding composites (SMCs) in which the increase in viscosity makes the composites less tacky, and for dry film resists (DFRs). Above Tp, the curable system containing the dissolved crystalline polymer has a viscosity which is substantially less than its viscosity below Tp.

  • Patent number: 6433037
Abstract: A method of preparing fiber reinforced acrylic thickened compositions which can be molded under low pressures and temperatures to provide thermoset articles, wherein liquid reactive components are slowly absorbed in high molecular weight solid acrylic resin in the form of large particles. The acrylic resin functions as a thickener which delays the viscosity build allowing fiber reinforcement to be incorporated before molding. The molding composition is well suited for use in dentistry and other fields where small amounts or molding composition are used occasionally.

  • Patent number: 6395800
Abstract: The biocompatibility of various polymers are improved by blending with them a polymer including a zwitterionic group. The zwitterionic group is usually an ammonium phosphate ester zwitterionic group and the polymer containing it may be produced by the free radical polymerisation of ethylenically unsaturated monomers including a monomer bearing the zwitterionic group. Blending of the two polymers may be achieved by dry blending particulate polymers or by mixing the polymers in liquid dispersion or solution followed by removal of the liquid medium. The fibrinogen absorption and/or platelet activation of polymers may be reduced to a value of less than 80% or even less than 60% of the base polymer by introducing amounts of more than 10% or more than 30% of the zwitterionic group containing polymer. Preferred blends are of copolymers of 2-(methacryloyloxyethyl)-2′-(trimethylammonium)ethyl phosphate inner salt with higher alkyl(meth)acrylate, blended with olefin polymers and/or with rubber latices.

  • Patent number: 6387990
Abstract: A curable composition is formulated from an epoxy resin; a flame-retardant additive essentially free of phenolic groups and of epoxy groups; and a thermoplastic resin. The preferred epoxy resin is a mixture of an epoxy resin with less than 2 glycidyl ether groups per molecule and an epoxy resin that has greater than 2 glycidyl ether groups per molecule. The preferred flame-retardant additive is a brominated heterocyclic compound that preferable is triazine. The preferred thermoplastic resin is a poly(phenylene ether). The inventive curable compositions advantageously can be combined with reinforcement in the manufacture of circuit boards having excellent electrical properties, good solvent resistance, and good thermal expansion characteristics.

  • Patent number: 6359102
Abstract: Improvements are disclosed for biphasic polymerization processes in which an aqueous solution of a first monomer that is hydrolytically unstable below a pH of about six or above a pH of about eight is admixed with a water-immiscible organic solvent and there is added to the admixture a catalyst selected from tertiary amine, quaternary amine and phosphonium catalysts, an acid-forming co-monomer for the first monomer, an acid scavenger, after which the resulting polymer is recovered, wherein the improvement includes providing the aqueous solution at a pH between about si and about eight, and adding to the admixture the acid-forming co-monomer and the acid scavenger at relative rates effective to maintain the pH of the admixture between about six and about eight. The catalyst may be added in a molar ratio to the first monomer effective to provide a predetermined weight-average or number-average molecular weight for the resulting polymer.
