Abstract: A polymerizable polymer is obtained by the anionic polymerization and termination by use of a vinyl monomer. It produces a graft copolymer by co-polymerization with another monomer. The process produces a new, polymerizable, optically active polymer and a graft copolymer thereof.
Abstract: A new class of polymeric or polymerizable aromatic-aliphatic ketones, the preferred of which are: 2-hydroxy-2-methyl(4-vinylpropiophenone), 2-hydroxy-2-methyl-p(1-methylvinyl)propiophenone, p-vinylbenzoylcyclohexanol, p-(1-methylvinyl)benzoyl-cyclohexanol and their oligomerization and polymerization products, they being suitable for use as photoinitiators for the photopolymerization of ethylenically unsaturated monomers and prepolymers.Said ketones are produced by subjecting an aromatic substrate, preferably a monomer or oligomer of styrene type, to the following reaction cycle: polymerization - acylation - alphachlorination - nucleophilic substitution with the formation of epoxyether - hydrolysis of the epoxyether; or to other reactions as modifications or alternatives to this cycle. The ketones according to the present invention have high efficiency as photoinitiators both with regard to the useful concentration to be used and with regard to the polymerization rate.

Abstract: Polymeric dyes having pendent chromophore groups which are selected from azo, tricyanovinyl, anthraquinone, methine, and indoaniline groups fall into two classes, [A] condensation polymers, and [B] polymers derived from copolymerized ethylenically-unsaturated monomers, the dyes being capable of undergoing thermoplastic deformation by a focused laser beam when in a layer of thickness in the range of 0.1 to 100 micrometers and having an absorptivity in the range of 10 to 250 Lg.sup.-1 cm.sup.-1. They are film-forming, thermally- and light-stable, and solvent-coatable. These compounds are useful as coloring and light-absorbing agents, particularly as the light-absorbing agents in thin optical recording layers.

Abstract: Aromatic hydrocarbon resins having a number-average molecular weight of 500-2,500 and containing, in particular, units derived from styrene and/or from its higher homologs, are acylated with vinylketone groups RR'C.dbd.CR"--CO-- grafted onto the aromatic nuclei of the said resin, said resin further containing from 10 to 90 mol %, and preferably from 30 to 60 mol %, of units derived from indene and/or from its higher homologs, and containing from 0.02 to 0.07 grafted vinylketone group per aromatic nucleus. The resultant acylated resins are either polymerized anionically to polymers having a weight-average molecular weight ranging from 10.sup.4 to 2.10.sup.7, or are copolymerized with a living polymer such as polymethyl methacrylate.
Abstract: Treatment of diene rubber with a diketo compound, in which the keto groups are part of a six-carbon hydrocarbon ring containing carbon-to-carbon unsaturation, or a tautomer of the compound, is performed at temperatures above 130.degree. C. Rubber compositions treated in this manner exhibit increased green strength, decreased plasticity, and, when vulcanized, decreased hysteresis.

Abstract: A process for the impact modification of a plastic with a rubbery polymer to form a thermoplastic resin in a reactor extruder is provided. The process includes the steps of dissolving a rubbery polymer in at least one ethylenically unsaturated monomer to form a feed solution, introducing the feed solution into the feed section of a twin screw reactor extruder, heating the feed solution under pressure to a temperature sufficient for polymerization to begin, shearing the feed solution until the solids content formed is equal to at least about twice the rubber content in the feed solution so as to produce a phase inversion product wherein discrete particles of rubber become encapsulated in a continuous phase of plastic polymer formed from the ethylenically unsaturated monomer, thereafter reacting the phase inversion product until at least about 70 weight percent of the feed solution has been converted to a thermoplastic resin, and extruding the said thermoplastic resin through a die.
Abstract: Graft-polymers of,.alpha.,.alpha.'-disubstituted .beta.-propiolactones on isobutylene-triene copolymers are prepared by reacting an isobutylene-triene copolymer with maleic anhydride and possibly with other functionalizing agents adapted to introduce acid and ester groups in the copolymer molecule and by neutralizing or hydrolyzing, or both, with a tetraalkylammonium base, said functional groups, said neutralization or hydrolysis, or both, being followed by a grafting reaction with pivalolactone.
Abstract: Flame retardation of 1,2-polybutadiene based upon the use of halogenated bisphenol bisacrylate reactive flame retardants, for example, 2,2-bis(4-methacryloyl-3,5-dibromophenyl)-propane. Flame retardancy performance of UL 94 V-0 or V-1 has been achieved without impairing desirable dielectric properties and heat resistance inherently possessed by 1,2-polybutadiene. If an aromatic bismaleimide modifier, for example, N,N'-4,4'-diphenylmethane bismaleimide, is jointly used, a thermal expansion coefficient less than a half of the thermal expansion coefficient of cured 1,2-polybutadiene can be achieved.
