Patent number: 4284517Abstract: A method for the recovery of oil from an oil-containing subterranean formation by waterflooding employing as an injection medium an aqueous solution of an anionic polymeric surfactant formed by reacting a polymer including succinic anhydride moieties with a primary amine to provide a polymeric reaction product in which at least 20 mol percent of the anhydride moieties have been converted, by reaction with said amine, to succinimide or succinamide groups. The polymeric anionic surfactants of the invention exhibit good physical and chemical stability, are shear stable, are effective in maintaining the salt stability of other surfactants (such as petroleum sulfonates) and also function as viscosifiers, even in the presence of significant concentrations of divalent metal ions.Type: GrantFiled: October 26, 1978Date of Patent: August 18, 1981Assignee: Mobil Oil CorporationInventors: Catherine S. H. Chen, Edward W. Sheppard

Patent number: 4260705Abstract: A polymer suitable for use in affinity chromatography comprising a polymer f an aminimide and a vinyl compound having at least one pendant halo-methyl group and the said polymer wherein an amine ligand which affords sites for binding in affinity chromatography is coupled to the polymer by reaction with a portion of the pendant halo-methyl groups and the remainder of said pendant halo-methyl groups are reacted with an amine containing a pendant hydrophilic group. The invention also comprises a method of coating a substrate with the above polymer and a method of fractionating mixtures by affinity chromatography employing the above polymer as an adsorbent.Type: GrantFiled: November 16, 1977Date of Patent: April 7, 1981Assignee: Board of Regents, for and on behalf of the University of FloridaInventor: John C. M. Tsibris

Patent number: 4256622Abstract: A four-component composition is disclosed comprising 100 parts of a non-aminoplast hydroxyl-bearing polymer; about 5-100 parts of a (poly)glycol monoether having an atmospheric boiling point of about 300.degree. C. or greater; an aminoplast or phenolic resin capable of curing the hydroxyl-bearing polymer and a strong acid catalyst for the reaction between the first and third components. Optionally, a pigment may be added to the composition.Type: GrantFiled: January 7, 1980Date of Patent: March 17, 1981Assignee: The Dow Chemical CompanyInventor: Harry A. Smith

Patent number: 4238579Abstract: Vinylamine copolymers are disclosed. These copolymers have randomly distributed repeating units represented by the formula ##STR1## wherein Ar is optionally substituted phenyl, the substituents independently selected from C.sub.1 to C.sub.6 alkyl, C.sub.1 to C.sub.6 alkoxy and halo; x and y are numbers greater than zero which total 1.0, the ratio of x to y from about 0.05:0.95 to about 0.95:0.05; and n is an integer from about 14 to about 10,000. Acid addition salts of these copolymers are also disclosed, as are vinylacetamide/aromatic hydrolysis precursors and the terpolymeric vinylamine/vinylacetamide/aromatic products of partial hydrolysis. The copolymers are useful as epoxy resin-curing agents and as components of protective or decorative coatings.Type: GrantFiled: May 18, 1979Date of Patent: December 9, 1980Assignee: DynapolInventors: William J. Leonard, Jr., Robert E. Wingard, Jr.

Patent number: 4230836Abstract: Polymers of p-methyl styrene can be cross-linked with chemical cross-linking agents, such as peroxides, to produce insoluble products. The methyl styrene used has a high content of the para-isomer. An important end use is for rigid food or beverage containers subjected to thermal conditions.Type: GrantFiled: April 26, 1979Date of Patent: October 28, 1980Assignee: Mobil Oil CorporationInventor: Peter J. Patent number: RE30362Abstract: Poly(vinylamine salts of mineral acids are produced by reacting acetaldehyde and acetamide at a mole ratio of 1:2-4 with acid catalyst, cracking the ethylidene-bisacetamide which results into vinylacetamide, polymerizing the vinylacetamide with a free radical polymerization catalyst, and hydrolyzing the poly(vinylacetamide) to the desired amine salts by contacting the polyvinylacetamide with an aqueous solution of the corresponding mineral acid. This product may be converted to the free amine, which in turn may function as a precursor in the manufacture of certain polymeric dyes and colorants.Type: GrantFiled: April 17, 1979Date of Patent: August 5, 1980Assignee: DynapolInventors: Richard D. Gless, Jr., Daniel J. Dawson, Robert E. Wingard, Jr.
