Abstract: A surface treatment method is described herein where a stabilizing (e.g., crosslinking agent) is pre-mixed into a fluid stock comprising a processable polymer. The stock is processed to form products (e.g., nanofibers or films), followed by exposing the products to a stabilizing (e.g., crosslinking catalyst, such as acid vapors), which results in stabilization (e.g., polymer cross-linking on the surface of the product). In some embodiments, the morphology of the product is not changed upon crosslinking. Moreover in some instances, this method does not need strong acids and is performed with weak acids such as acetic acid which reduces environmental pollution. In addition to water soluble polymers (e.g., PVA), this method is applicable to proteins such as soy protein, and combinations of polymers and proteins in various embodiments.

Abstract: A moisture vapor and oxygen transmission resistant flexible film has a polymeric base layer and a barrier layer of discrete particles of a first organic polymer dispersed throughout a matrix of a second organic polymer. Preferably, the first and second polymers are water insoluble and water soluble, respectively. The barrier layer is formed by depositing onto the base layer a coating composition of finely divided insoluble organic polymer particles suspended in an aqueous solution of the water soluble organic polymer, a crosslinking agent and surfactant. The coating composition is heated to crosslink the barrier layer polymers and evaporate solvent to provide a barrier film suitable for packaging applications. Optionally, the film can be metalized to increase barrier properties.

Abstract: Ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymers have superior gas barrier properties, but are inferior in bending fatigue resistance. The present invention improves bending fatigue resistance without reducing the gas barrier property and heat resistance. An ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer having an ethylene content of 20 to 50 percent by mole is modified by incorporating 0.01 to 1% mol of a structural unit expressed by the following formula (3): wherein, n indicates an integer of 2 to 5, m indicates an integer of 10 to 20, and R1 indicates a C1 to C20 aliphatic hydrocarbon group provided that R1 may contain a mercapto group, thioester group, sulfenamide, vinyl group, methacryloxy group, or acryloxy group. The modified ethylene vinyl alcohol copolymer may be used as a gas barrier resin and this gas barrier resin may be shaped or laminated and used in various applications such as in pneumatic tires and hoses.
