Preparation of the latexes may be achieved by emulsion polymerization of at least one ethylenically unsaturated monomer in the presence of a waterborne alkyd having at least one pendant sulfonate functionality. Preparation of hybrid latexes which contain latent oxidative functional (LOF) acrylic monomers may also be achieved by emulsion polymerization of at least one LOF acrylic monomer in the presence of a waterborne alkyd having at least one pendant sulfonate functionality whereby the latent oxidative functionality of the acrylic polymer survives polymerization.
