Patent number: 5130369Abstract: Functionalized polymeric compositions are prepared by polymerizing ethylenically unsaturated functional monomer in a solvent including a reactive compound. The functional groups of the reactive compound and the functional monomer react during or subsequent to the polymerization of the functional monomer to provide functionalized polymeric composition. Patent number: 4833179Abstract: The present invention relates to a method for suspension polymerization of a pressure-sensitive acrylate copolymer bead having a glass transition temperature of 0.degree. C. or less. The method comprises making a monomer premix comprising an acrylic acid ester of non-tertiary alcohol, the alcohol having from 1 to 14 carbon atoms, with the average number of carbon atoms being about 4 to about 12, a polar monomer copolymerizable with the acrylic acid ester, a chain transfer agent, a free-radical initiator, and a modifier moiety selected from the group consisting of 2-polystyrylethyl methacrylate macromolecular monomers, reactive zinc salts and hydrophobic silicas. The premix is then combined with a water phase containing a sufficient amount of suspending agent to form a suspension. The suspension is concurrently agitated and polymerization of the polymer premix is permitted until polymer beads are formed. The polymer beads are then collected.Type: GrantFiled: October 2, 1987Date of Patent: May 23, 1989Assignee: Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing CompanyInventors: Chung I. Young, Rudyard M. Enanoza

Patent number: 4777230Abstract: A process is provided for the free radical polymerization of monomers derived from substituted or unsubstituted acrylic acid/methacrylic acid and esters thereof for the production of a polymer having a narrow molecular weight distribution and an average molecular weight of less than 4000. These polymers are produced by the solution polymerizing of said monomers wherein 20-40% by weight of the monomer composition is hydroxyalkyl acrylate or methacrylate in the presence of a solvent system suitable for high solids coating applications and in the presence of an initiating amount of a tertiary alkyl hydroperoxide and/or its derivatives having at least 5 carbons wherein the initiator and monomers, alone or in combination, are added continuously at a programmed rate wherein the rate of addition corresponds approximately to the rate of decomposition of said monomer and initiator. These polymers are used for high solids coating applications.Type: GrantFiled: December 12, 1986Date of Patent: October 11, 1988Assignee: Pennwalt CorporationInventor: Vasanth R. Kamath

Patent number: 4774303Abstract: Polymers of acrylic acid or methacrylic acid are prepared by polymerizing acrylic acid and/or methacrylic acid at 50.degree.-180.degree. C. in a C.sub.2 -C.sub.6 -alcohol or mixtures thereof with water having a C.sub.2 -C.dwnarw.6.uparw.-alcohol content of not less than 40% by weight in the presence of free radical polymerization initiators and from 0.01 to 5% by weight, based on the monomers used, of inorganic acids of phosphorus in which the phosphorus has an oxidation number of from 1 to 4, or of water-soluble salts thereof, water-soluble --PO(OH).sub.2 -containing compounds and/or water-soluble salts thereof. The polymers thus prepared are effective milling aids and dispersants for pigments for producing aqueous pigment slurries for use in paper-coating compositions.Type: GrantFiled: January 29, 1987Date of Patent: September 27, 1988Assignee: BASF AktiengesellschaftInventors: Walter Denzinger, Heinrich Hartmann, Guenter Hirsch, Hans-Werner Becker, Michael Rohmann

Patent number: 4758642Abstract: According to one aspect of the present invention, an improved method for preparing acrylic copolymer resins is provided in which the polymerization solvent includes an internal olefin. The monomers comprise hydroxy-substituted alkyl (meth)acrylates, and non-hydroxy substituted alkyl (meth)acrylates, and the process provides an improved method for forming low molecular weight acrylic resins useful as components in high solids acrylic coatings suitable for electrostatic spraying. The polymerization solvent can remain in the resin to become the solvent employed in the higher solids coating containing the thus-formed acrylic resins and provides surprisingly improved electrical resistivity and color decreased over previously used polymerization solvents, and has good compatibility with the acrylic monomer/resin system.Type: GrantFiled: December 11, 1985Date of Patent: July 19, 1988Assignee: Exxon Chemical Patents Inc.Inventors: Albet I.
