    Abstract: A process for the production of paste-forming polymers of vinyl chloride by emulsion or microsuspension polymerization, utilizes as the auxiliary dispersant an alcohol glycol ether of the general formula ##STR1## wherein R is an alkyl- or alkylene residue of 16-30 carbon atoms, R.sub.1 is H or an alkyl residue of 1-2 carbon atoms, and n is a number from 1 to 3. It is also possible to employ the predispersion method. The polymers yield pastes of low viscosity and an almost Newtonian fluid characteristic, and final products exhibiting a high resistance to fogging.

    Abstract: A process is described for producing unique and novel sulfonate-containing terpolymers of water soluble monomers with water insoluble monomers which are efficient viscosifiers of aqueous and brine media. The process relies on the complete solubilization of the water insoluble monomer by means of a dilute solution of a suitable water soluble surfactant. The type and concentration of surfactant are chosen to produce a clear, uniform, homogeneous aqueous dispersion of the hydrophobic monomers in the presence of both nonionic and anionic water soluble monomers, and, in addition, the reaction medium remains a clear, uniform, homogeneous mixture with no phase separation as the reaction proceeds to completion. Thus, the terpolymerization is effected without the formation of latexes or fine particulates of water insoluble polymer.The terpolymers, which may be isolated from the reaction mixture, provide efficient viscosification of water or brine solutions.

    Abstract: There is disclosed a simple economical method of producing butadiene rubber, particularly NBR, in dry powder form free of extraneous material influencing its utility in rubber products manufacture. The method consists of preparing the butadiene rubber in latex form in the usual manner but using sodium lauryl sulfate or equivalent as emulsifier and then coagulating the latex with a combination of magnesium sulfate and aluminum sulfate, or their equivalents, in a molar ratio of Mg to Al in the range of 0.3 to 1 to 2 to 1. The coagulum wet cake obtained contains powder size particles of the rubber and is dried to give a dry free-flowing rubber powder, preferably after addition of zinc stearate or equivalent which functions as an anticake agent and prevents agglomeration of the powder size particles during drying. The zinc stearate can be added to the wet cake as dry powder or as a wet paste or produced in situ.

    Abstract: There is disclosed a process for preparing vinyl dispersion resins by conducting the polymerization reaction of the vinyl monomer or monomers in an aqueous alkaline medium, using an oil-soluble polymerization initiator, at low temperatures, in the presence of an emulsifier and, optionally, at least one long straight chain alcohol containing from 14 to 24 carbon atoms, and in the presence of an electrolyte, such as for example, ammonium carbonate ((NH.sub.4).sub.2 CO.sub.3), and wherein the reaction ingredients are thoroughly mixed, or homogenized, prior to polymerization. The aqueous emulsion of the polymer(s) so produced are capable of being dried into friable aggregates of individual spheres of polymer particles. The dried resin can easily be formulated into plastisols of high North Fineness and high gloss. In addition, polymer buildup in the reactor is reduced.

The composition is rendered self-emulsifying by incorporating certain anionic and/or nonionic surfactants in a concentration range of about 0.25 to about 10.0 percent. The preferred anionics comprise the petroleum sulfonates and the sodium alkyl or alkylaryl sulfonates. The preferred nonionics comprise the ethoxylated alkyl alcohols, the ethoxylated alkyl phenols, and the polyoxyethylene/polyoxypropylene glycols. Any anaerobic monomer or monomer mixture in which the surfactant is soluble and compatible with the cure system may be used.These self-emulsifiable compositions have the advantage of being readily removed from surfaces by washing with water, which makes them especially useful in impregnation processes where uncured resin must be removed from areas which are difficult to wash, such as small, blind holes.
