Patent number: 6488410Abstract: A reclosable packaging having a slider/zipper assembly, a header and a tamper-evident feature which undergoes a tangible change when the slider is moved relative to the header for the first time. The tamper-evident feature comprises a layer of sticky or adhesive material placed between a surface of the header and an opposing surface of the slider, thus forming a seal. The material must have a peel strength or resistance to rupture sufficient to resist an initial movement of the slider along the zipper. If the slider is stuck or adhered to the header, this indicates that the package or bag has not been tampered with, i.e., previously opened. When sufficient force is applied, the seal can be broken, allowing the slider to move relative to the header along the zipper in the direction of opening. Once broken, the seal cannot be restored by simply returning the slider to its original position and pressing the slider against the sticky or adhesive material.Type: GrantFiled: October 11, 2001Date of Patent: December 3, 2002Assignee: Illinois Tool Works Inc.Inventor: John H. Schneider

The packaging film is provided at package length intervals with thermoformable strips secured thereto transversely to the running length of the film, and is fed to a modified standard vertical form, fill and seal packaging machine with gussets forming tooling where the film is formed into a bag with the thermoformable strips inside at the upper end of the bag, product deposited into the bag, the bag sealed, the reclosable interlocking seal formed, and the bag severed from the next bag being formed. The reclosable seal provides auditory and tactile indications of seal closing. Some packages are formed with the thermoformable strips in the gusset, and some are formed with the gusset free of strip material.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 3, 2001Publication date: April 25, 2002Inventor: Harold M. Publication number: 20020043049Abstract: Methods for making packages having improved openable and reclosable interlocking seals from a continuous web of composite packaging film, the seal having male and female portions of arrowhead shape in cross section, snap detents, and being formed transversely to the direction of film flow during package formation at line speed. The packaging film is provided at package length intervals with thermoformable strips secured thereto transversely to the running length of the film, and is fed to a modified standard vertical form, fill and seal packaging machine where the film is formed into a bag with the thermoformable strip inside in ends abutting folded facing relationship at the upper end of the bag, product deposited into the bag, the bag sealed, the reclosable interlocking seal formed, and the bag severed from the next bag being formed.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 18, 2001Publication date: April 18, 2002Applicant: SEALSTRIP CORPORATIONInventors: Harold M. Patent number: 6370842Abstract: An object is to prevent roughening of a rupture surface of a packaging material (12) that is formed upon opening of a spout (21) through application of an external force. There are provided transport means for transporting a layered packaging material (12) that is formed of a paper substrate and resin films and that has a rupture area (52) at a location corresponding to that of opening means; a seal unit for sealing the packaging material (12); and heating means disposed on the upstream side of the seal unit in the transport direction of the packaging material (12) such that the heating means is opposed to an innermost layer of the packaging material (12) in order to heat the packaging material (12). In this case, after being heated and melted, the resin film of the packaging material (12) is gradually cooled. As a result, thermoplastic resin that constitutes the resin film is crystallized and becomes brittle.Type: GrantFiled: February 1, 2000Date of Patent: April 16, 2002Assignee: Tetra Laval Holdings & Finance, S.A.Inventors: Yasuyuki Moriyama, Yukihisa Kumeta, Shigeo Katsumata

Publication number: 20020040563Abstract: An invention for forming, filling, and sealing a flexible recloseable container. Both vertical and horizontal methods for placing product within the container are disclosed. The invention includes guiding a web of film which has interlocking fastener strips sealed to the web. A slider for locking and unlocking the fastener strips is placed in the correct orientation, spread apart at a pair of inner feet, and inserted over the fastener strips. The slider is positioned to close a substantial portion of the strips, and then an end stop, docking station, and corner seal are formed against a sealing plate. The slider is then repositioned, and a tamper evident seal may be placed over the fastener strips.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 17, 2001Publication date: April 11, 2002Inventor: Ronald G. Thieman
