Cinching Or Wiping Around To Form Initial Wrap Patents (Class 53/465)
  • Patent number: 5533321
Abstract: A method and apparatus for applying a wrapper to a paper roll, a turret mechanism has a crimper and an inside head holder on one side and an outside head applying platen on the opposite side, a drive for rotating the turret mechanism to place the crimper and inside head holder adjacent the paper roll end to place an inside head on the paper roll and crimp the wrapper over the inside head, and then rotating the turret mechanism to place the outside head applying platen adjacent the paper roll to place an outside head over the crimped wrapper all at a single station. The inside head holder has several retractable vacuum cups that can also apply positive air pressure to hold the inside head against the roll and during crimping. The vacuum cups are sequentially, independently retracted as a crimp approaches to clear the crimp as the paper roll is rotated.

  • Patent number: 5473863
Abstract: A continuous wrapper web is wrapped about a roll that rotates about a rotational axis. The wrapper web is tensioned as it moves toward the roll by means of a brake mechanism disposed intermediate the roll and the source of the wrapper web so as to control tension and feed speed of the wrapper web. An end of the wrapper web is caused to contact the roll such that the wrapper web wraps about the roll in tension as the roll rotates. A portion of the wrapper web is caused to slacken and form a wave in a region intermediate the brake mechanism and the source of the wrapper web such that, in a direction parallel to the rotating roll's rotational axis, the wrapper web assumes tensional equilibrium when approaching and contacting the roll. This procedure reduces wrinkling of the wrapper web as it wraps about the roll due to misalignment between the end of the wrapper web and the rotational axis of the rotating roll.

According to the method the paper roll (23) is rotated on support rolls (13), the wrapper (12) is guided about the roll (23) so that the laminate layer (26) comes against the roll, the wrapper (12) is adhered to the roll by applying energy onto the wrapper in order to attain the melting of the plastic film laminate, whereby the wrapper (12) adheres to the roll (23), and the roll (23) being rotated is wrapped into at least one turn of the wrapper. According to the invention the wrapper laminate layer is melted from the laminate side to adhere the wrapper to the roll being wrapped, and when necessary, the area and/or energy density of melting energy application onto the wrapper material is varied in the direction of the center axis of the roll in order to achieve a desired pattern of adherence.

Abstract: Manual wrap stations for handwrapping of trayed products in film are arranged in back-to-back fashion. They have a common wrap surface between them to provide a reduced-cost, space-saving tandem or dual hand wrap station. Two operators face each other during wrapping and alternately use the common wrap surface. In a preferred form, the wrap surface is either a weighing scale platter itself or the platter can be alongside a separate wrap surface. In either such form, the system enables weighing, computing, label printing and hand labeling of wrapped products without loss of productivity. The arrangement eliminates the need for an additional computing scale and label printer, such as would be necessary to obtain the same productivity with separate wrap stations using such equipment. An audible signal is provided to indicate that the scale has completed a weighing, enabling ease of the operators' pacing of their alternating manual functions, without each having to watch the other's actions.
