  • Patent number: 5331791
Abstract: It is often desired to again seal packages, consisting initially of foils hot-sealed with one another, after opening and partial removal of the content in the package in order to at least partially separate the remaining content in the package from the environment. A resealing area is provided for this purpose besides the hot-sealing area, with which the top and the bottom foil are connected to one another, which resealing area consists of individual closing elements which, fitting into each other, are provided in the two foils. The foils are not threadlike connected with one another in the resealing area. Rather dotlike closing elements exist, which also permit a small undercut. They are formed in matrixes without a top die, which matrixes are thereby subjected to an underpressure, whereas the other side of the foil is under an excess pressure. The deformation is thus brought about purely pneumatically.

  • Patent number: 5182896
Abstract: A film cover is heat-sealed to the open end of containers and cut from a film stock by a cam-actuated, orbitally moving knife blade which severs the film stock along a circumferential region closely adjacent the container's open end. A major extent of the orbital movement of the cam-actuated knife blade about the open-ended container is preferably substantially circular (to closely conform to the circular cross-sectional geometry of open-ended containers to be film-covered). However, a minor segment of the knife blade's orbital movement is cam-actuated so as to follow a segment of an arcuate non-circular (e.g., elliptical) path to form a protruding tab on the film cover so as to allow a consumer to more easily grasp and remove the same. The film is preferably continuously supplied to the sealing and cutting zone, while the waste web (i.e., the film remaining after the film cover has been cut from the film stock) is continuously retrieved from the sealig and cutting zone at substantially constant rates.

  • Patent number: 5160391
Abstract: A method is disclosed wherein a lid is engaged to a container by the formation of interlocking waves of lid material and container meterial about the interior rim of the container. The interlocking waves are geometrically aligned relative to the interior of the container so as to maximize the burst strength of the container, and also to minimize the force required to peel the lid from the container. An unheated clamp head is used to clamp the lid structure immediately adjacent a heated seal head used to form the interlocking wave structure about the inside rim of the container. The unheated clamp head prevents any melted portions of the containter or lid from flowing to or towards the outside rim of the container. Interlocking waves of material are thereby prevented from forming about the exterior rim of the container.

  • Patent number: 5157901
Abstract: A method for sealing a retort container comprises the steps of heat-sealing an opening of a retort container after charging contents into the container so that a line-seal having a width ranging from 0.5 to 2.5 mm is formed to thus seal the container and then performing knurled sealing at a portion including the line-seal. The sealing method can provide a container having sufficient seal strength and does not spoil the beautiful appearance of the flange portion of the container even if contents thereof remain in the flanged portion or the like. Moreover, the method does not cause foaming in the sealed regions at all and it is not necessary to perform the sealing treatment under substantially severe conditions to prevent the occurrence of the foaming and, therefore, the method can provide containers having a sealed portion easily peelable.

  • Patent number: 4991377
Abstract: By means of the method proposed the joining of a cap and a body of a capsule used to enclose medicines, with the open end of the body already inserted in the cap, is achieved by directing a flow of hot compressed fluid, progressively on a circular portion of the cap overlapping a relative underlying circular portion of the body, so as to affect the entire circumference of the circular portion of the cap; the resulting seal between the said portions prevents separation, without breaking, of the cap or the body.

  • Patent number: 4991731
Abstract: This invention relates to a closure which permits the opening of a hermetically sealed plastic container in a single action motion, which also maintains the hermetic seal under retort conditions. This closure includes a generally cylindrical side wall having threads along the inner surface thereof and a top portion having a metallic disk with its lower surface coated with a fusible coating, such as polypropylene. An annular flange is provided along the inner surface of the side wall to retain the metallic disk between the annular flange and an inwardly inclined inner surface portion of the side wall. A method is also disclosed for providing a hermetic seal on plastic containers using the closure of this invention.

  • Patent number: 4982555
Abstract: The invention relates to a method and a device for the sealing of a container (10) by means of a wafer (20). The container comprises one or more joining means (14, 16) which are adapted so that by a joint (12), e.g. a welding joint, they are connected in a leakproof manner, to the wafer in an edge zone (21) of the same. The wafer is held against a contact surface (32) of a retaining means so as to be moved by the same until it rests in its edge zone (21) against anyone of the joining means (14, 16). While the contact with the retaining means is maintained, the wafer is connected by a fixing means (50) in its edge zone in a leakproof manner to anyone of the joining means through the fixing means supplying energy to the edge zone so that a joint (12) is formed. The invention makes it possible to fix in a leakproof manner a previously cut wafer to the opening part of a container.

  • Patent number: 4888935
Abstract: A dished foil lid is secured to a container having a flange at its top by placing the lid over the open top of the container with the periphery of the foil on the flange and the dished portion of the lid extending downwardly into the container, and by applying a heating tool to the exterior of the foil adjacent the inner edge of the top of the container. The heating tool preferably has a tapered tip portion so that when it is urged into the depression formed by the dished portion of the lid, the side surfaces of the tip bear against the part of the foil adjacent to the inner edge of the top of the container. The time, temperature and pressure of application of the tip are such as to cause the adjacent inner edge of the container to soften and, upon subsequent removal of the tool, a narrow seal is formed between lid and container at the inner edge of the top of the container. The resultant seal is not only uniform and hermetic, but is easily parted when one later peels off the lid.

Abstract: A process is disclosed for the fabrication of a thermoplastic container having a lid bonded thereto. The container and lid are formed from laminated thermoplastics wherein at least one of the layers that forms the laminate is dielectrically heatable. The heatable layers of the cup and lid are placed in contact with one another, dielectrically heated, and melt together to form a continuous bonded area or lid seam between the cup and lid. The materials of the cup and lid are selected such that the resultant bonded area forms an exygen barrier between the contents of the container and the outside environment. The strength of the bonded area is selected such that the lid may be manually-removed from the container.
