  • Patent number: 5155977
Abstract: A paper bundler for stacking and bundling recyclable paper waste, such as newspapers, magazines, and legal size or letter size office paper. The apparatus has two main parts, a basket and a cradle. The basket is made in two parts which are independently mounted to the cradle so they are free to rotate. Together, the halves of the basket form a paper receptacle which is rectangular and open at the top, with a gap in the middle for applying a strapping agent, such as masking tape. The cradle has a rectangular base and two vertical sides which support the rotating basket. A compression bar with a toggle latch is mounted on each half of the basket adjacent the gap between the two halves. The papers can be placed directly in the bundler as they are discarded. When the stack reaches a convenient size, the compression bars are used to compact the loose stack of newspapers into a tight bundle and hold them as the basket is rotated to apply the strapping agent to complete the bundling operation.

  • Patent number: 5126002
Abstract: A leaf paper bundling apparatus winds a tape around the periphery of a stack of leaf papers. A stacking device stacks and aligns a predetermined number of leaf papers in an upright position in a direction parallel to the short edges of the leaf papers. Left and right holding fingers are employed to hold the stacked leaf papers and transfer the stacked leaf papers to a bundling position, maintaining the upright position of the stacked leaf papers. A tape fed by a tape supply is wound around the stacked leaf papers by a tape winding device. The tape is tightened about the stacked leaf papers, and a pair of clamping members clamp the stacked leaf papers therebetween. The clamping members each have spaced contact edges straddling the tape. The stacked leaf papers can then be tightly held together without interfering with the winding of the tape about the stacked leaf papers.

Abstract: Folio reams are draped into discrete panels of paper or other wrapping material while in continuous motion along a horizontal path. The panels are fed from below so that the front, lateral and rear portions of each panel extend beyond the respective sides of the corresponding ream. The rear portions of successive panels are folded upwardly against the rear sides and thereupon forwardly against the top sides of the respective reams. The front portions of the panels are provided with films of adhesive and are folded upwardly against the front sides and thereupon rearwardly against the top sides of the respective reams so that their leaders overlie and are adhesively secured to the folded rear portions. The folding of front and rear portions is preceded by squaring of the reams and is followed by tucking and folding of front, rear and lateral portions of successive panels against the adjacent lateral sides of the respective reams.

Abstract: A continuous packaging sleever assembly and process for wrapping packaging sleeves about product groups. The assembly has a frame structure with a generally horizontal working surface, a transfer conveyor to move the product containers across the working surface, and horizontally movable flight bar structures connected to a continuous chain structure. The flight bar structures are constructed and arranged to be selectively movable in a generally perpendicular direction to the product transfer conveyor means and to separate the product containers into predetermined groups. A packaging sleeve transfer and placement structure is provided in synchronization with the flight bar structures for depositing flat packaging sleeves between adjacent flight bar structures and above the product groups. Abstract: A newspaper bundler comprises a rigid frame assembly (FIGS. 1 and 2) for enabling newspapers to be easily stacked into a pile (12). The frame includes a U-shaped crosswise holder (14) whose upstanding opposing side arms are made of sheet metal or plastic channels (22). A stack of paper bundling straps (26) is positioned on the crosswise portion. The channels each have a pocket for holding fan-folded end portions (30) of the stack of paper straps. One end portion of each strap is coated with adhesive (32) so when the end portions of a strap are pulled from their pockets, they can be attached together around the pile of papers to securely bundle them so that they can be carried easily with one hand (FIG. 5). The entire bundle is recyclable at a paper mill. In lieu of sheet metal side channels with pockets, the side pockets can be formed of tubular members (FIG. 6) bent and shaped to form pockets for the fan-folded ends of the straps.

  • Patent number: 5020301
Abstract: For baling shrubs or bushes, in particular rose bushes, the roots (12) of the plants (10) substantially freed from soil are embedded in a moisture-containing substrate (14) such as peat and provided with a sheath or envelope. For this purpose a hollow of wire grating (16) is formed which is then partially filled with substrate (14). Thereafter the roots (12) of the lying plant (10) are placed on the substrate (14). Further substrate (14) is then applied to the roots (12). Finally the wire grating (16) is deformed by bending two edges (24, 26) of the hollow together to form a tube and the edges (24, 26) of the wire grating (16) are fixedly connected together. A machine for carrying out this method comprises at least one trough (48) onto which the wire grating (16) can be placed. A ram (74) is shaped complementary to the trough (48) and adapted to be pressed into the latter to deform the wire grating (16 ) to a hollow.

Instead of utilizing locking cut outs provided for receiving articles to be packaged, special compression cuts are formed in the closure panels of a wrap around carton so that the compression cuts are independent of the locking cut outs thereby permitting one chain and lug arrangement to be utilized in conjunction with numerous types of packages. The lugs are carried by compression chains located in a plane below the support plane of the articles to be packaged with the lugs being pivotally mounted on pins and normally having downwardly sloping positions for engaging in the compression cuts when the closure flaps are in their generally vertical depending position. The lugs are swingable upwardly to generally horizontal positions with the closure panels.
