Abstract: Machine and method for making air-filled packing cushions from a roll of prefabricated film material having a longitudinally extending inflation channel near one edge of the material and chambers which communicate with the channel through laterally extending passageways. The roll rests on a pair of spaced apart, horizontally extending rollers. The film material is fed from the roll to an inflation tube which extends into the inflation channel, air is introduced into the chambers through the inflation tube to inflate the cushions, and a longitudinally extending seal is formed across the passageways between the channel and the chambers after the cushions are inflated.

The piston (2) is displaceable relative to the pusher between a storage position, in which it prevents communication between the outlet passage (5, 6) and the cylindrical tank (1), and an actuation position, in which it puts the outlet passage (5, 6) into communication with the cylindrical tank (1). According to one aspect of the invention, the piston (2) is maintained in its storage position by wedging.

  • Patent number: 5466473
Abstract: A beverage package has a sealed container 1 containing beer 11 having gas in solution and forming a headspace 16 containing gas at pressure greater than atmospheric. A hollow insert 7 is located in the container and is responsive to a pressure differential developed on opening the top 5 of the container to inject beer and/or gas therefrom into the beer 11 whereby to liberate gas 17 from solution and form froth in the headspace 16. A baffle plate 12 on the insert 7 restrains the liberation of gas 17 to a minor proporation of the volume of beer 11 so that when the beer is poured into a glass, gas can evolve naturally from the beer to produce "sparkle". As an alternative to the beer and/or gas injection bubble initiation, gas from solution in the minor proporation of the volume of beer may be liberated by contact of that beer with a bubble initiating material.

  • Patent number: 5419101
Abstract: A gas exchange manifold includes a pair of plates which may be threadedly connected to one another. Gas supplying passages are formed through the plates to supply a desired gas to the package during fabrication. Also, vacuum supplying passages extend through the same plates and communicate with the package as well. A third plate, which may be sandwiched between other two plates, may contain a plurality of apertures which form part of the gas supplying passages. In this way, the third plate, which may be smaller, may be replaced to provide the desired pattern of apertures for a given configuration of packages being formed.

  • Patent number: 5231816
Abstract: A method of packaging a beverage having gas in solution has an open topped container 1 in which is located a hollow insert 5 having a restricted aperture 12. The container is charged with the beverage such as beer 15 so that the aperture 12 is submerged in the beverage and the container is sealed to form a headspace 19 which is pressurized, preferably by dosing with liquid nitrogen. Following sealing the container is rapidly inverted to locate the aperture 12 in the headspace 19 so that gas pressures in the insert chamber 10 and the headspace 19 come into equilibrium. With the fluid contents in equilibrium, or substantially so, the package is reinverted so that gas under pressure in the insert chamber 10 communicates directly by way of the aperture 12 with beer in the chamber 10.

  • Patent number: 5121595
Abstract: A gas operated balloon inflating machine for inflating balloons of the kind having a body and a filling neck terminated in a beaded edge. The apparatus includes a gas operated releasable clamping device to secure the beaded edge of the balloon between a support surface and a sealing surface thereby providing for inflation of the balloon from an aperture in the sealing surface. A gas operated control valve selectively supplies gas to the aperture from a reservior and a gas operated sealing device is used to seal the neck of the balloons after inflation. A logic controller selectively supplies pressurized gas from a high pressure source to the clamping device, control valve and sealing means to sequentially clamp, inflate, seal and release balloons. The exhaust gas from each of these devices is directed to the reservoir for inflation of the balloons. The size to which the balloons are inflated is preferably controlled by the size of the inflating reservoir and regulation of the pressure in the reservoir.

  • Patent number: 5111639
Abstract: A method and apparatus are disclosed for sealing pallets of fresh product inside plastic bags and finishing the interiors of the sealed bags with a modified gaseous atmosphere. Conventional pallets loaded with cooled fresh produce are moved by an input conveyor automatically one at a time to an in-line squeeze station. A plastic bag at a convenient height is initially draped over an arm radiating from a novel bagger frame. A plurality of such arms extend from a rotatable hub so that bags can be moved into position above successive loaded pallets as they are needed. This apparatus permits the bagging of nearly twice as many pallets in a given time period.

  • Patent number: 5016428
Abstract: Inflating apparatus and method disclosed has a base preferably mounted on the side of a gas-filled tank and located approximately at or below waist level. A balloon is mounted on a mounting sleeve on the base. The balloon is mounted so that an end section of the neck portion is expanded and everted back over a top lip of the mounting sleeve to form an air-tight connection with the mounting sleeve and the neck portion extends down through the sleeve. If a coating material is desired on the outside of the balloon the coating material is initially placed inside the balloon, the balloon is mounted on the top of the sleeve and turned inside out by being passed down through the mounting sleeve before inflation. A fill plug is pressed down against an end section of the balloon on top of the mounting sleeve to form an air-tight seal and gas under pressure is selectively passed into the balloon. A size gauge indicates when the balloon is a selected size.

  • Patent number: 4974393
Abstract: The present invention is directed to apparatus and methods for inserting objects into balloons. The apparatus preferably includes a housing having a balloon chamber and a vacuum pump chamber therein. The balloon chamber is large enough to accommodate an inflated balloon and has a lid through which the inflated balloon can pass. The vacuum pump chamber houses a vacuum pump which is in gaseous communication with the balloon chamber in order to create a vacuum therein. The lid includes an adjustable mechanism for first expanding and then maintaining a balloon orifice in an expanded condition to enable access to the interior of the balloon in a position in which the balloon extends downwardly from the lid to a position inside the balloon chamber. The vacuum pump may then be actuated to cause the balloon to inflate within the balloon chamber so that the desired object may be inserted through an access opening in the lid to the inside of the balloon.
