  • Patent number: 6105341
Abstract: A process is provided for displacing air from containers prior to seaming a lid to a container. In the process, a container body is filled with contents and is then injected with liquid nitrogen. A lid is immediately placed on the container body, and a biasing force is immediately applied against the lid to maintain the lid on the liquid nitrogen filled container bodies until the container body reaches the seaming mechanism. The biasing force is sufficient to allow a portion of nitrogen gas from vaporization of the liquid nitrogen to escape from the container body, and to allow air originally present in the container body to escape from the container body, while preventing surrounding air from entering the container body.

  • Patent number: 5495699
Abstract: The invention is directed to an apparatus for filling and sealing a canister having a weldable end wall. A weld head assembly includes a head having a welding electrode disposed within an opening for receiving a pressurized gas and defining a terminal end. The head further has a seal operably associated with the terminal end for engaging the end wall of the canister. A ball shuttle assembly includes a shuttle block having a passage for receiving the weld ball. The ball shuttle assembly further includes a device for positioning the shuttle block whereby the weld ball is in substantially coaxial alignment with the opening, and moving the weld ball into the opening of the weld head. The passage of the shuttle block is fluidly disassociated from the opening in the weld head when the seal is engaged with the end wall of the canister.

  • Patent number: 5228274
Abstract: An improved generally concave body (bell attachment) is disclosed for applying a vacuum to conventional canning jars. Like the prior art, the bell attachment fits over the jar top and a placed flexible lid for sealing the jar and seals to the top of the jar at the jar sealing rim. Unlike the prior art, the top locates with respect to the thread on the jar to limit the penetration of the top of the bell over the top of the jar and to define clearance between the bell and lid. This clearance sets forth a small distance of vertical excursion between the captured flexible lid and the top of the bell. Preferably, a system of peripheral and overhead grooves are provided in the interior of the bell so that the flexible top may be guided into sealing registry with the jar top while still maintaining a free passage for the evacuation of gas interior of the jar to an evacuating connection communicated to the bell.

  • Patent number: 4899896
Abstract: A cap adapted for use in pressurizing the interior of a container for carbonated beverages, the container having an opening therein, the cap comprising a cap adapted for sealing engagement with the container for sealing closure of the opening, a boss projecting from the cap for connecting a pressurizing device to the cap, a passage in the boss for providing communication between the pressurizing device and the interior of the container when the cap is on the container, the pressurizing device being operable to introduce gas via the passage into the interior of the container to pressurize it, and a single check valve in the passage.

  • Patent number: 4372096
Abstract: A device for sealing a preserving jaw by generation of a powerful vacuum in the head space of the jar. This is put into effect by a hood which is evacuated by means of an external vacuum pump, and is put over the jar's mouth loosely covered with a thin lid, the hood having an air tight seat on the jar. The lid is lifted by the vacuum inside of the hood and the air left within the jar is, consequently, evacuated. A special valve ensures that atmospheric air may not reenter the hood unless the lid had been pressed against the top edge of the jar's mouth, thus creating an air tight seat of both parts. The external overpressure keeps the jar tightly and durably sealed.
