    Abstract: A group of compounds comprising the reaction product of a hydroxy naphthylamine sulfonic acid with a diazotized compound comprising, an aromatic azo substituted Cleves Acid such that the diazotized compound is coupled with the hydroxy naphthylamine sulfonic acid ortho to the amine group. More particularly the compounds of the invention comprise a compound having the formula: ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 is an aromatic azo radical, R.sub.2 is hydrogen or an aromatic azo group and R.sub.3 is amino, substituted amino or an aromatic azo group. The invention further includes inks made from such compositions and methods for using such inks in ink jet printers.

    Abstract: An ink comprising: water, a water soluble organic solvent, and a colorant represented by the following general formula (I): ##STR1## wherein Q1 is a substituted phenyl group; Q2 is a substituted or unsubstituted p-phenylene or a substituted or unsubstituted 1,4-naphtylene group; Q3 is a substituted phenyl group; M is an alkali metal, ammonium or an organic ammonium; and n is 0 or 1, and wherein said colorant has at least a sulfone group and a carboxyl group and the number of said sulfone groups is not greater than the number of said carboxyl groups. Such an ink may be used for an ink jet recording.
