Abstract: A dual filter arrangement for a vacuum cleaner for filtering particles of dust and debris from an airflow passing through the vacuum cleaner. The dual filter comprises a coarse pre-filter having an array of pores formed therein of substantially uniform diameter and a fine primary filter which is located rearwardly of the pre-filter in the direction of flow of the airflow. The dual filter is releasably latched to a main housing portion of the vacuum cleaner housing. A nose cone is removably secured to the housing and circumscribes the dual filter assembly. The dual filter enables even more efficient filtering of contaminants from dust and dirt entrained air ingested by the vacuum cleaner. Attachment of the dual filter to the main housing portion provides the additional advantage of increasing the capacity of the nose cone and eliminating the need for the user to handle the dual filter assembly when emptying contaminants collected within the nose cone.

Abstract: A spiral wound filter element is disclosed which includes alternating layers of filter medium and diffusion medium wrapped about a cylindrical core defining a central axis of the filter element. The alternating layers extend from a radially innermost layer of the filter element to a radially outermost layer of the filter element, the diffusion medium is defined by a continuous lengthwise sheet of mesh material, and the filter medium is defined by at least one sheet of filter material arranged along the length of the continuous sheet of mesh material. The alternating layers of filter medium and diffusion medium define three distinct radially disposed layered filtering sections surrounding the cylindrical core, and include a first filtering section having radially outer prequalifying layers, a second filtering section having middle prequalifying layers and a third filtering section having radially inner qualifying layers.

  • Patent number: 6375854
Abstract: A combined filter for removing an aqueous fluid and entities, such as bacteria, existing in such aqueous fluid, from a nonaqueous fluid is described. The combined filter consists of a hydrophilic filter and a hydrophobic filter that are arranged in fluid communication and serially to be placed along the flow path of a fluid. The hydrophilic filter and the hydrophobic filter may touch one another or be located some distance from one another. Also, a structure may be inserted into the space between the hydrophilic filter and the hydrophobic filter that will maintain the space between the hydrophilic filter and the hydrophobic filter without significantly restricting the flow of fluid. And, in one embodiment, the combined filter may be composed simply of material having both hydrophilic and hydrophobic characteristics on the molecular level. Preferably, however, the filters and spacing structure are contained within an encasement having an inlet and an outlet.

  • Patent number: 6162270
Abstract: The invention relates to a downdraft paint booth having an overspray filtering system integral with the floor grates, and to the floor grate filters themselves. The grates have a load bearing frame portion having enclosed within it an integral or removable recyclable filter. The filter is preferably metallic and of a construction that will withstand baking in a high temperature oven to reduce captured overspray particles to an inert ash. Alternatively, the combination floor grate filters may be cleaned of paint residue by immersion in a suitable solvent or chemical bath. The floor grate filters will have 95-99% efficiency at removing airborne particulates. Secondary filters may be used after the combination floor grate filters to remove any final over-spray passing the filters. Typically, the floor grate fillers will go through five to ten cleaning cycles before he secondary filters would need replacement.

  • Patent number: 6159258
Abstract: Air filter elements with primary filter medias have foam pre-cleaners with an increased surface area provided by an upstream face which has peaks and valleys. In one embodiment, the peaks and valleys are defined by parallel ribs. If the filter element is a panel-type filter element having a pleated primary filter media, then, in accordance with one embodiment, the pre-cleaner is secured to the primary filter media by adhesive deposits on the peaks of the primary filter media. If the filter element is annular, the pre-cleaner is also annular and is slid axially over a perforated sleeve or screen on the primary filter media and held thereon by friction. By having the upstream surface of the foam pre-cleaner configured in peaks and valleys, the surface area of the upstream surface is increased substantially, which improves the capacity, efficiency and life of the filter element.

  • Patent number: 6115879
Abstract: The vacuum cleaner includes a hollow canister, one end of which is closed by a removable cap to permit removal of debris from within the interior. The canister is separated into two compartments, one defined by the first end and a hollow rigid conical filter disposed in the interior. The filter has a base adjacent to the inner wall throughout its extent and tapers toward the second end of the canister. The filter further has openings too small to allow debris such as cigarette and cigar butts, excrement of animals and birds and the like to pass therethrough but large enough to allow smaller debris to pass. A second compartment is defined by the filter and a relatively flat filter having openings smaller than that of the conical filter. Both filters extend across the interior such that all air which travels through the interior must pass through the filters. An intake hose admits debris-laden air into the first compartment and an exhaust discharges air from the second compartment.
