Patent number: 5205849Abstract: Disposable air filter includes a filter element formed from a stacked plurality of annular disks. The disks are formed from a sorptive material and expand upon absorption of oil or water droplets. The disks are slightly compressed by a movable baffle. The baffle floats upon a stream of air entering the filter and directs the air radially through the filter element. The air flows between and through the disks with a resulting low pressure drop across the filter. As the disks expand, the baffle shifts axially within a filter housing to maintain the pressure drop across the filter element.Type: GrantFiled: June 29, 1992Date of Patent: April 27, 1993Assignee: Ransburg CorporationInventors: Michael J. Patent number: 5199414Abstract: A heating and air conditioning unit has a fan compartment containing a hammock-type filter. The hammock-type filter rests upon feet elevated above the bottom of the fan compartment so that air may flow into the fan through either the bottom panel of the hammock filter or either of the side panels. The front and back of channels of the bottom pannel are telescoped so that they can be expanded and always be longer than the width of the fan. Sponge rubber is provided at the front and back so that if a larger compartment is used that air leakage at the front and back is prevented by the sponge or foam rubber. The top edges of the side panels rest against the sides of the fan compartment. Foam rubber along these edges prevents noise caused by vibration as well as preventing air leakage.Type: GrantFiled: October 14, 1992Date of Patent: April 6, 1993Inventor: Donald C. McMillon

Patent number: 4265647Abstract: An air prefilter is disclosed for use with internal combustion engine air filters of the type having replaceable filter elements. The prefilter has a perforated sleeve connected between the usual intake openings and the filter element of the conventional air filter. This perforated sleeve is enveloped by an open-pore foam filter medium, which is of such porosity that engine intake air primarily passes therethrough rather than through the intake openings of the conventional air filter. The prefilter prevents foreign matter and water vapor from reaching and blocking the conventional filter element, which blocking causes the engine to receive insufficient air for efficient combustion. When the prefilter medium is saturated or blocked with impurities, the conventional air filter operates as usual, until the prefilter medium is cleaned or replaced. An adjustable deflector helps prevent foreign matter from blocking the prefilter medium.Type: GrantFiled: May 14, 1979Date of Patent: May 5, 1981Inventor: James P. Donachiue
