Abstract: The trisubstituted (2,5-dihydroxyphenyl)phosphonium hydroxide inner salts and their hydrolyzed derivatives are novel latent catalysts for promoting reaction between vicinal epoxides and phenols and/or carboxylic acids (or anhydrides). Precatalyzed epoxy resins are easily prepared using such catalysts.

Abstract: Esters of poly(tetramethylene ether) glycol are prepared by polymerizing tetrahydrofuran in a reaction mixture which contains, in addition to the tetrahydrofuran, and acylium ion precursor such as acetic anhydride, a polymeric catalyst which contains sulfonic acid groups and, optionally, a carboxylic acid such as acetic acid.

Abstract: Dental restorative, pit and fissure sealant compositions having improved environmental resistance include a brominated acrylate such as dibromopropyl methacrylate and/or a diacrylate of the formula: ##STR1## where n is an integer from 1 to 6, R.sup.1 is hydrogen or alkyl of 1 to 6 carbon atoms, R.sup.2 is alkylene of 1 to 5 carbon atoms or ##STR2## WHERE R.sup.3 is hydrogen, alkyl of 1 to 4 carbon atoms or --OH and x and y are selected from 0 or an integer from 1 to 4 and Ar is a cyclic group, preferably an aromatic group.
Abstract: A process for the preparation of hydroxy ethers which comprises reacting an epoxide compound with an organic hydroxy compound in the presence of a PdCl.sub.2 /CuCl.sub.2 /O.sub.2 catalyst system, and recovering the hydroxy ether thus formed from the reaction mixture by a separation step such as distillation. An alternative catalyst system is K.sub.2 PdCl.sub.6 /CuCl.sub.2 /O.sub.2.
Abstract: Linear copolymers of glycidol, glycidyl esters of unsaturated fatty acids and, optionally, alkylene oxides, are made by the reaction of an unsaturated fatty acid with a polymer or copolymer of tert.-butyl glycidyl ether in the presence of an acid catalyst. The products are polymerizable and copolymerizable with vinyl monomers and are useful as curable resins.

Abstract: A synergistic catalytic effect is realized in the esterification reaction between an organic carboxylic acid and a vicinal epoxide by using a catalyst system comprising: (a) a compound containing an amino and/or ammonium nitrogen atom, in combination with (b) a soluble compound containing an ionizable atom of iron or chromium.
