Abstract: The present invention relates to an improved process for the selective alkylation of phenols using heteropolyacid catalyst supported onto zirconia under mild conditions. The process is economically viable since the catalyst regenerated after the initial reaction on further use gives the product in high yield.

Abstract: The present invention is directed to oil-soluble lubricating oil additives comprising Mannich Base condensates of an alkyl substituted hydroxy aromatic compound with formaldehyde and an amine, wherein the alkyl-moiety of the aromatic compounds is derived from at least one ethylene alpha-olefin copolymer of 300 to 20,000 number average molecular weight, wherein at least about 30% of the polymer's chains contain terminal ethenylidene unsaturation. The Mannich Base condensates of this invention are useful as dispersants.

Abstract: Drastic molecular weight degradation of a p-(polybutyl-substituted phenol occurs when it is heated above 65.degree. C. in the presence of BF.sub.3 -phenolate catalyst used in the preparation of said substituted phenol by the alkylation of phenol with a butylene polymer of 500 to 3000 molecular weight. Such molecular weight degradation can be substantially suppressed by providing 20 to 30 weight percent dissolved phenol in the mixture resulting from such catalytic alkylation reaction and then rapidly heating the mixture with such amount of dissolved phenol to a temperature of from 182.degree. C. up to 200.degree. C. at extant atmospheric pressure whereat the catalyst dissociates and liberated BF.sub.3 is stripped out by phenol vapors.

Abstract: A process for selectively alkylating a phenolic compound in the ortho-position which comprises reacting a phenolic compound with an alkanol in the presence of a boron trifluoride etherate catalyst and optionally in the presence of a solvent such as aqueous and non-aqueous inorganic acids.
Abstract: Butylation of a mixture of xylenols and trimethylphenols gives a product which is suitable for use as a stabilizer for polyvinyl chloride. The material can be added to the reactor during polymerization as a short-stopper and retain effectiveness as a stabilizer in the finished polymer.
