  • Patent number: 8938965
Abstract: A thermal-powered reciprocating-force motor includes a shutter switchable between a first position that passes solar energy and a second position that blocks solar energy. A shape memory alloy (SMA) actuator is coupled to the shutter to control switching thereof between the shutter's first and second position. The actuator is positioned with respect to the shutter such that (i) solar energy impinges on the SMA when the shutter is in its first position so that the SMA experiences contraction in length until the shutter is switched to its second position, and (ii) solar energy is impeded from impingement on the SMA when the shutter is in its second position so that the SMA experiences extension in length. Elastic members coupled to the actuator apply a force to the SMA that aids in its extension in length until the shutter is switched to its first position.

  • Patent number: 8650877
Abstract: The present invention is a solar panel that generates electricity and extracts heat. A set of such panels may be assembled into a blind. The blind may have a frame that can be retrofit on an existing window. Fluid in the panel is heated by incoming solar radiation, causing it to move, constrained by a one-way valve, in one direction. A Tesla Valve may be used as the one-way valve. The moving fluid may pass through a generator, generating electricity. Heat may be extracted from the fluid by a heat exchanger. The heat may be used to heat a building.

  • Patent number: 8534068
Abstract: A solar chimney includes an elongated chamber having the general configuration of an hourglass. The chamber includes one or more heat exchangers for heating air in the chamber by solar energy. A turbine in the chamber is driven by updrafts of air created in the chamber, and the turbine drives an electric generator or other machine. An exhaust wind turbine assists in the production of such updrafts. A vertical axis wind turbine harnesses energy of wind in the environment of the chimney, and such energy is used to drive the exhaust wind turbine. Excess wind energy is stored for later use. A set of extendable and retractable vanes, mounted externally of the chimney, deflects wind, in the environment of the chimney, towards the vertical axis wind turbine.

  • Patent number: 7877999
Abstract: A thermodynamic engine is configured to convert heat provided in the form of a temperature difference to a nonheat form of energy. Heat is directed through a heating loop in thermal contact with a first side of the thermodynamic engine. A second side of the thermodynamic engine is coupled to an environmental cooling loop in thermal contact with an environmental cooling device. The thermodynamic engine is operated to dispense heat from the second side of the thermodynamic engine through the environmental cooling loop into the environmental cooling device. Operation of the thermodynamic engine thereby generates the nonheat form of energy from the temperature difference established between the first side and the second side of the thermodynamic engine.
