  • Publication number: 20080208001
Abstract: Described herein are endoscopes having outer perimeter shapes configured to conform to the particular anatomy through which they will navigate. The outer perimeter cross-section of the endoscope may have one or more regions (e.g., longitudinal protuberances, edges, or narrow regions) that may allow the endoscope to conform with or fit within narrow or irregularly shaped regions of a body lumen, channel or passageway. Thus, the cross-sectional shape of the insertion tube of the endoscope may have an outer perimeter cross-section that is substantially D-shaped, oval, triangular, lobular, teardrop shaped, or the like. These non-circular cross-sectional shapes are matched approximately to the geometry of the region of the body into which the endoscope will be inserted, thereby allowing the endoscope to more precisely fit within a body lumen.

Abstract: A method for forming an arthroscope having an inclined angle of view includes providing an inner lens tube member, an outer tube member, and an annular shim member. The annular shim member is positioned about an outer peripheral portion of the inner lens tube member and includes an upper portion defining an outer positioning surface and side edges angularly offset relative to an optical axis. The inner lens tube member and annular shim member are positioned within the outer tube member while a plurality of optical fibers are positioned therebetween. The optical fibers are oriented about the outer positioning surface and side edges such that the optical fibers are angularly offset relative to the optical axis. Alternatively, a shim member may be provided that is arcuate and defines a cross-sectional dimension approximating a maximum inner dimension of the outer tube member, wherein the shim member engages the outer tube member to stabilize the inner lens tube member therein.

  • Patent number: 5575751
Abstract: A device for measuring incident light in a remote situs such as a body cavity which includes a central tubular member through which light is delivered to the remote situs and one or more auxiliary tubular members through which incident light in the remote situs is transmitted to a light detector. Each auxiliary tubular member receives incident light from a different portion of the remote situs. The apparatus is particularly useful for conducting phototherapy in body cavities and has been demonstrated in the phototherapy treatment of superficial cancer in a bladder.

  • Patent number: 5538497
Abstract: An endoscope includes a first tube having a proximal end and distal end, a second tube having a proximal end and distal end, and a control rod movably coupled to the first tube and secured to the second tube for allowing the second tube to be rotated out of lengthwise alignment with and axially movable with respect to the first tube. The first tube includes concentrically disposed optical fibers with ends terminating at the distal end of the first tube. The second tube includes separate concentrically disposed optical fibers with ends terminating at both the proximal and distal ends of the second tube. When the first and second tubes are longitudinally aligned, at least some of the optical fibers in the second tube are substantially aligned with those in the first tube such that light is coupled therebetween. Both of the first and second tubes are capable of receiving imaging means.

  • Patent number: 5505687
Abstract: An obturator for measuring incident light in a remote situs such as a body cavity which includes a treatment tubular member through which light is delivered to the remote situs and one or more auxiliary tubular members through which incident light in the remote situs is transmitted to an external light detector. The treatment and auxiliary tubular members are attached to a connector element which is in turn connected to a cystoscope lens port. The treatment and auxiliary tubular members are aligned off-center with respect to the central axis of the obturator so that a cystoscope lens can be inserted in the lens port and pass through the axial center of the obturator. Each auxiliary tubular member receives incident light from a different portion of the remote situs. The apparatus is particularly useful for conducting phototherapy in body cavities and has been demonstrated in the phototherapy treatment of superficial cancer in the bladder.

Abstract: An electronic endoscope having an internal circuit board bearing an electronic circuit arrayed thereon and coupled with a solid-state image pick-up element, with wires of the circuit board connected to lead wires passing through the insertion portion of the endoscope. The circuit board is folded along lines extending the axial direction of the distal end of the insertion portion, so as to divide the circuit board into a plurality of planar surfaces. The electronic circuit wiring portion and the lead wire connecting portion are laid out on the different planar surfaces.
