Patent number: 7393334Abstract: The device is a thin, self-adhesive non-stretch splint, having the capability to flex. This device is intended for the treatment of repetitive stress injuries such as Carpal Tunnel Syndrome with elements that provide user adjustable limitation of movement within acceptable medical parameters. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome symptoms include pain and numbness in the thumb, index, and middle fingers, that are aggravated by compression of the median nerve. This device limits flexion, extension, ulnar and radial deviation movements of the wrist without compressing the median nerve The device limits movement by reducing skin elasticity on the surface skin above or below the wrist and up the forearm. The application provides biomechanical feedback to the wearer in the form of the tugging sensation on the skin around the perimeter of the device assisting the user in maintaining a more neutral wrist position without imposing wrist immobilization.Type: GrantFiled: April 9, 2005Date of Patent: July 1, 2008Inventor: Richard Manuel Tornai

Patent number: 6852121Abstract: The present invention provides a thermal treatment pack that includes a tubular body having a first opening, a second opening, an inner surface and an outer surface. The first opening, the inner surface and the second opening cooperate to define a passage through the tubular body for the limb. The inner surface and the outer surface of the tubular body are defined by a continuous film of flexible material such as a copolymer of polyester and polyurethane. A temperature-retaining fluid such as a water-based gel is received between the inner surface and the outer surface. Optionally, a thermal pack according to the invention can be covered with a fabric layer to provide insulation between the continuous film of flexible material and a user's skin. The diameter of the passage through the thermal treatment pack is preferably smaller than or equal to the diameter of the injured limb, which causes the inner surface of the thermal treatment pack to make contact the limb or an insulating wrap placed over the limb.Type: GrantFiled: November 18, 2002Date of Patent: February 8, 2005Assignee: Wendell-Alan, Ltd.Inventors: Jeffrey Alan Wilson, Jonathan Wendell Flick

Patent number: 6663582Abstract: A wearable vial holder for securing at least one vial of medication on the person of a medical practitioner comprises a body-engaging member structured and arranged to be secured to a part of the body of a medical practitioner, and a vial gripper affixed to the body-engaging member for releasably grasping and holding at least one vial so that the practitioner has access to the vial(s) for one-handed drawing of medication therefrom using a syringe with a needle. The vial holder includes a needle-puncture-resistant shield to protect the practitioner against accidental needle sticks.Type: GrantFiled: October 25, 2001Date of Patent: December 16, 2003Assignee: Cambridge Marketing, Inc.Inventors: Jerome Douglas Ballard, Carol Jeannette Ballard, Christopher George Lerra

Publication number: 20030163075Abstract: A splint (10) worn by a sufferer of carpal tunnel syndrome. A first sleeve (12) fits over the person's hand (H) and extends up their arm (A) past their wrist (W). This sleeve is worn during non-working portions of the person's day and includes a support (14) formed in the palm portion of the sleeve to support the carpal tunnel and relieve pressure on the median nerve passing through it. This alleviates pain caused by carpal tunnel syndrome. A second sleeve (22) also fits over the person's hand and extends up their arm past their wrist. This second sleeve, which is also worn during non-working portions of the day, extends further up the person's arm than the first sleeve. A support (24) of this second sleeve extends along the back of the person's hand to also relieve pressure on the median nerve and alleviate the pain caused by carpal tunnel syndrome.Type: ApplicationFiled: February 26, 2002Publication date: August 28, 2003Inventor: James C. Publication number: 20030144692Abstract: The present invention provides an orthotic appliance for the carpus of a human hand for the treatment of carpal tunnel syndrome using co-dynamic, rather than traditional static or dynamic, techniques. The appliance may apply a 2 pound dorsally directed force about the region of the pisiform bone in the neutral carpal position of a human hand upon co-contraction of the hand and up to 8 pounds dorsally directed during arc of motion in carpal flexion, as the wrist and hand is encouraged to actively move in all planes of motion without negatively affecting the normal activities of daily living. The appliance may comprise a biasing structure for applying the dorsally directed force and a base structure for maintaining the biasing structure in its proper configuration during normal hand motion.Type: ApplicationFiled: January 28, 2003Publication date: July 31, 2003Inventor: George Roger Williams

Patent number: 6569111Abstract: Wrist bandage 1 with a first angled strip 10 which consists of two branches 101, 102 which run together at an acute angle and whose inner edges 131, 132 are connected to one another at least in sections, and with a second elongate strip 40 which is attached to the second branch 102 of the angled strip 10. In the transition area between the branches 101, 102, a substantially round incision 30 is made which starts in the first branch 101 and extends into the second branch 102 and, when the bandage 1 is applied, serves to receive the thumb, and which, in the distal forearm area, at the transition to the carpal area, wraps round the carpal area in a circle.Type: GrantFiled: July 26, 2001Date of Patent: May 27, 2003Assignee: Beiersdorf AGInventor: Thorsten Herzberg

Publication number: 20030078530Abstract: A two-piece wrist-hand-finger orthosis of the present invention includes a rigid forearm section secured to the patient's arm, and a rigid hand section with a proximally projecting extension lever. The hand section is donned on the patient with the patient's hand in flexion. The hand section is then leveraged into a position of predetermined flexion or extension by pivoting the extension lever downwardly into contact with the forearm section. The extension lever is then secured to the forearm section.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 22, 2001Publication date: April 24, 2003Inventor: Andrew W. Wolfe

Patent number: 6520926Abstract: A multilayer compression support sleeve construction. The laminate material includes a thin polyurethane film coated on both surfaces with an adhesive. A stretchable elastomeric polymer material is bonded to each of the adhesive surfaces. A substantial portion of one of the elastomeric polymer surfaces is coated with a discontinuous layer of silicone microdots. The microdots are applied by gravure roll printing to project a uniform distance above the elastomeric polymer surface to form small tacky dots. The laminate material is fabricated into a sleeve with the material oriented so that the microdot coated face is adjacent the skin of the wearer. Microdots may be applied in a predetermined pattern in order to impart enhanced compression to certain areas of the support sleeve. The resulting support sleeve retains its breathability while presenting a nonslip inner surface which prevents migration of the garment on the skin of the wearer during exercise.Type: GrantFiled: February 24, 1999Date of Patent: February 18, 2003Assignee: Lohmann Rauscher, Inc.Inventor: Michael R.
