  • Patent number: 8814840
Abstract: There is described a medical apparatus, which may comprise a fluid collection vessel and a sensor. The sensor is arranged to sense when the fluid collection vessel is substantially full even when the fluid collection vessel is tilted by up to a predetermined angle from its preferred orientation. The fluid collection vessel may comprise a main chamber and a sensor chamber in fluid communication with one another. The sensor is located in the sensor chamber. The fluid inlet, the main chamber and the sensor chamber are arranged such that fluid entering the fluid collection vessel via the fluid inlet flows into the main chamber even when the fluid collection vessel is tilted by up to the predetermined angle from its preferred orientation, and, once the main chamber is full, any further collected fluid flows from the main chamber into the sensor chamber.

The valve comprises a valve inlet (24) coupled to the sampler inlet, a valve outlet (38, 36) opening into the sample chamber and positioned, in use, substantially below the valve inlet, a shut-off chamber (32) separating the valve outlet from the valve inlet, and a valve overflow (34) leading from the shut-off chamber to the sampler overflow (6). Abstract: A collection cup for a drug testing system includes a central volume and a trough, exterior to the central volume. The trough is configured with a pour spout such that, as fluid is poured from the cup, a controlled volume remains in the trough. The trough is configured to receive an on-site test kit and to apply the controlled volume of the fluid to test strips within the on-site test kit. The trough also includes two apertures in the wall between the trough and the central volume which allow excess fluid to flow back into the cup when the cup is placed upright after pouring and when the test kit is inserted into the trough.

  • Patent number: 6482190
Abstract: An improved outlet tube device for a urinary drainage bag is disclosed wherein an outlet valve mechanism is contained with a rigid housing fixed securely to the drainage bag, rather than just being clamped to the outlet tubing, and thus cannot become separated from the bag. The outlet valve can be opened only by positive action on the part of the medical care personnel, thereby assuring that urine will be discharged only in a controlled manner. Further, because the valve mechanism does not require that a substantial length of tubing with a freely movable end be used in conjunction with the outlet port, there is no need to engage the free end of the tubing with a keeper. Thus the possibility of the tubing springing back to its straight configuration and flicking residual urine on the attending medical personnel is eliminated. In one embodiment the outlet tube device comprises a pinchcock-type valve which is fixedly mounted to the bag and which is normally operative to clamp off the outlet tube.

The catheter comprises a contact member which is adapted to be engaged with at least the extreme portion of a penis, said contact member being connected to a discharge conduit via an opening in the distal end section of the contact member. The catheter is provided with an aperture. A membrane, which is capable of selectively passing gases but retaining urine, is fastened to the surface surrounding the aperture. The membrane is at least partly protected by a shield. At least one vent for allowing gases to be in substantially unhindered contact with the external surface of the membrane is arranged in the catheter.

Abstract: A portable drainage system allows patients to ambulate in a hospital or to be discharged to their homes with active suction draining fluids and gases from bodily areas, including sites proximate to surgical procedures. The portable chest tube drainage system includes a vacuum chamber, a vacuum pump housing and a fluid reservoir. These components, in one embodiment, removably connect to the portable drainage system and are disposable. The vacuum pump housing includes a vacuum source, which may comprise a small vacuum pump and one or more removable, replaceable, and/or rechargeable batteries. A vacuum regulating control responsive to user manipulation regulates the vacuum and restricts the vacuum to levels non-injurious to tissues proximate the end of a drainage tube connected to the portable drainage system. A vacuum pressure relief valve incorporated in line maintains the maximal vacuum pressure inside the vacuum chamber below a non-injurious level.

  • Patent number: 6296627
Abstract: A urine collection system for use by a person using a float tube comprises a flexible pouch housing a urine collection reservoir in fluid communication with the person. The pouch defines first and second openings, one for receiving a tube connected to the urine collection reservoir that is coupled to the user with a condom catheter and a second for receiving a drainage valve for conveniently emptying urine from the reservoir. A unidirectional valve is associated with the tube for preventing urine from exiting the reservoir while allowing urine to freely enter the reservoir. The pouch is preferably placed outside the float tube at or above the water level so that water pressure does not affect the operation of the urine collection system.

  • Patent number: 6235010
Abstract: This invention relates to a closed system specimen collection container. The collection container is designed to collect, transport and transfer the liquid specimen into a non-evacuated tube through an integrated valve component. This device has no sharp needles and utilizes a blunt cannula component on a test tube. The operation of the device consists of the steps of collecting a specimen into the container and attaching a cap in permanent locking and leak resistant attachment. The cap may be a snap-on or threaded lock. The specimen may then be immediately transported to a laboratory in the container where the specimen can be transferred into a tube for analysis. Alternatively, the specimen may then be immediately transferred into a non-evacuated tube through the integrated valve by a passive means. This technique is accomplished by inserting the blunt cannula attached to the tube into the bottom of the container and interfacing with the integrated valve component.

Preferably, the regulator includes a spring operated valve. The device also includes a vent path arrangement having an intermediate chamber and at least two passages that are perpendicular to two adjacent surfaces within the intermediate chamber. The two passages and intermediate chamber are arranged so liquid in the collection chamber does not flow and contaminate the upstream portions of the device when the device is resting on its front side or backside.
