Patent number: 5916203Abstract: A method of making a composite material having elasticized portions includes supplying a web of temperature sensitive elastic material, applying a microwave sensitive material to selected regions of the elastic material and subsecting the composite material to microwave energy. The microwave energy may be converted into heat by the microwave sensitive material thereby heating the microwave sensitive material and activating regions of the temperature sensitive elastic material adjacent the microwave sensitive material. The activated regions of the elastic material provide the elasticized portions in the composite material. Alternatively, the microwave sensitive material may reflect the microwave energy which may then directly heat and activate the regions of the elastic material opposite the selected regions to which the microwave sensitive material is applied. The method is particularly useful in the manufacture of garment-type articles such as disposable absorbent articles.Type: GrantFiled: November 3, 1997Date of Patent: June 29, 1999Assignee: Kimberly-Clark Worldwide, Inc.Inventors: Robert Griffiths Brandon, Franklin Mean-Chi Chen, Robert Eugene Vogt

Patent number: 5846232Abstract: An absorbent article includes extensible zones. These extensible zones enable the absorbent article to expand and fit a broad size range of users. The extensible zones enable a broad range of adjustment in waist and leg opening dimensions by extension and retraction of the extensible zones. The bodyside liner layer and the outer cover layer preferably comprise spunbonded layers stretched in one direction and correspondingly narrowed in another direction. The extensible zones typically include an elastic layer between, and mounted to extend with, the outer cover layer and the bodyside liner layer. The elastic layer can comprise an elastic film or strands of material. An absorbent core is located between the bodyside liner layer and the outer cover layer.Type: GrantFiled: December 20, 1995Date of Patent: December 8, 1998Assignee: Kimberly-Clark Worldwide, Inc.Inventors: Paul John Serbiak, Duane Girard Uitenbroek

Patent number: 5567501Abstract: A process for producing an apertured nonwoven fabric combines one or two outer nonwoven layer(s) with a layer of polymeric material having a lower melting temperature and a property of shrinking when melted. Heat and pressure are applied through a calendar roll such that the polymeric material becomes bonded to the fibers of the nonwoven layer(s) and simultaneously shrinks and takes back the fibers away from the calendaring points, thereby generating apertures through the nonwoven fabric. Preferably, the fibers are polyethylene or polypropylene fibers, and the layer of polymeric material is a thin plastic film of polyethylene stretch-wrap, elastomeric, or heat shrink material. One outer nonwoven layer may be combined with the plastic film layer to form a bi-laminate product, or two outer nonwoven layers may be combined with an intermediate plastic film to form a tri-laminate product. Low denier polypropylene/polyethylene bi-component fibers or a blend of higher and lower melting fibers may also be used.Type: GrantFiled: June 15, 1994Date of Patent: October 22, 1996Assignee: International Paper CompanyInventors: Ramesh Srinivasan, W. Patent number: 5554144Abstract: Absorbent articles such as disposable diapers, incontinent briefs, diaper holders, training pants, feminine hygiene garments and the like, that have a unique waist feature that improves the dynamic fit as well as the containment characteristics of the absorbent article. Such absorbent articles comprise a chassis assembly preferably comprising a liquid pervious topsheet, a liquid impervious backsheet, and an absorbent core positioned between the topsheet and the backsheet; an extensible back waist feature; and a closure system for maintaining the absorbent article on the wearer. The extensible back waist feature provides an extensible feature that provides a more comfortable and contouring fit by initially conformably fitting the diaper to the wearer and by sustaining this fit. The extensible back waist feature has a hip panel, a central waistband panel, and a pair of side panels. The force/extension characteristics of each panel is designed to provide such improved fit and containment.Type: GrantFiled: May 24, 1995Date of Patent: September 10, 1996Assignee: The Procter & Gamble CompanyInventors: Donald C. Patent number: 5545158Abstract: A disposable absorbent garment comprises a pair of elastic side sections, front and back sections, and a continuous, selectively elasticized waistband operatively joined thereto. The waistband does not substantially inhibit the elasticity of the elastic side sections, and provides the same or different elasticity to the front and back sections.Type: GrantFiled: June 23, 1994Date of Patent: August 13, 1996Assignee: Kimberly-Clark CorporationInventor: James L. Patent number: 5540672Abstract: An absorbent article has a lateral width, a longitudinal length, longitudinally extending side margins, a front waistband portion, a back waistband portion, and an intermediate portion which interconnects the front and back waistband portions. The article comprises a backsheet layer and an absorbent retention portion superposed on the backsheet layer. A liquid permeable topsheet layer is superposed on the retention portion to sandwich the retention portion between the topsheet layer and the backsheet layer. An elasticizing means form elasticized gathers at leg opening portions of the article. The elasticizing means include a front set of laterally opposed, longitudinally extending leg elastic members located in the article side margins in at least the intermediate portion of the article. The front elastic members are arranged asymmetrically with respect to the article length and have a selected offset toward the front waistband portion of the article.Type: GrantFiled: June 13, 1994Date of Patent: July 30, 1996Assignee: Kimberly-Clark CorporationInventors: Thomas H. Patent number: 5531729Abstract: In an absorbent article, such as a diaper or incontinence briefs, an elastic member comprising a net-like elastic substrate to which fibers are pre-bonded provides for a breathable elastic for use as a side- a waist- or leg elastic. The fibers that are bonded to the net-like substrate, for instance by hydro-entangling, ensure a soft and comfortable contact with the wearer's skin. In the side panels of the absorbent article, the elastic members have a large freedom of stretch without buckling taking place, thus reducing chances of leakage. When the elastic member is located between the topsheet and the backsheet, a strong connection of topsheet to backsheet is established using a relatively small amount of adhesive. When the topsheet is physically deformed to impart stretchability, the fibers of the elastic member form a soft and resilient layer and prevent direct contact of the elastic member and the user's skin in case of thinning of the topsheet.Type: GrantFiled: September 22, 1994Date of Patent: July 2, 1996Assignee: The Procter & Gamble CompanyInventors: Peter Coles, Attila Tamer

Patent number: 5527304Abstract: Absorbent article such as disposable diapers, incontinent briefs, diaper holders and the like, that have a unique elastic waist feature that improves the dynamic fit of the elasticized waistband as well as the containment characteristics of the absorbent article. The elastic waist feature preferably comprises an interconnecting panel zone, a first flexural hinge zone joining the interconnecting panel zone with the containment assembly, an elasticized waistband, and a second flexural hinge zone joining the elasticized waistband with the interconnecting panel zone. The elasticized waistband comprises a shaping panel zone; a waistline panel zone; and a predisposed, resilient, waistband flexural hinge zone joining the shaping panel zone and the waistline panel zone.Type: GrantFiled: June 6, 1995Date of Patent: June 18, 1996Assignee: The Proctor & Gamble CompanyInventors: Kenneth B.
