Abstract: A polymeric fibrous sheet is provided in the form of a composite of an open matrix of coarse fibers extending throughout the sheet and integrated with cocrystallized, fine fibers spanning the open spaces within the matrix. This non-woven sheet is formed by applying a thin film of polymer solution to the top surface of a substrate undergoing agitation. The substrate can be continuous, such as a belt, agitated by applying oscillatory motion from an acoustic or pneumatic driver to the shafts carrying the cylindrical rollers for the belt. The agitation is at a level sufficient to develop a reciprocating flow field with a velocity gradient sufficient to uncoil and orient the polymer chains in solution and induce the growth of fibers. As the agitated solution cools, a sheet is formed as linear polymer chains crystallize. Residual solvent is removed and the sheet is then dried in the dryer.

Abstract: A surgical swab comprises a warp knitted body portion (1) and an integrally warp knitted handling tape (3). Both the body portion and the handling tape are formed as two superimposed layers on a twin needle bed knitting machine, the respective longitudinal and/or laterally extending edges of each layer being joined by interknitting.The swab may be cut from a continuous swab strip which is formed by continuously knitting a length of body portion fabric and of handling tape fabric with a lateral band of the fabrics being knitted together at intervals. Individual swabs are separated from the strip by cutting through the lateral band.

Abstract: An improved surgical dressing or surgical sponge being a composite nonwoven and knitted fabric structure having high fluid absorbency and capillarity characteristics, is prepared by knitting a set of chain stitch wales of hydrophilic yarns, with said chain stitch wales being interconnected laterally by sets of filling courses, said filling course yarns being also comprised preferably of hydrophilic material. The chain stitch wale yarns are interknit through a light-weight, absorbent, non-woven web. The centrally disposed non-woven web is pliable and deformable so that capillary fibrous bundles of non-woven fabrics may be drawn into intimate physical contact with the yarns forming the loops of the chain stitch wales and their associated filling courses, resulting in a composite material having enhanced absorbancy and capillarity characteristics.

Abstract: An air-permeable and waterproof diaper cover comprises a front body part and a rear body part and two wings attached to the left and right upper sides of the rear body part. The rear body part comprises at least a section of waterproof and stretching material, and the front body part comprises at least a section of air-permeable and water-repellent material, whereby the combination and location of such materials prevents leakage of liquid while permitting air and gas circulation.
