  • Patent number: 11331249
Abstract: The present technology is a device for delivering a medicinal agent to a breastfeeding child. One embodiment comprises a first portion configured to be positioned on the breast during breastfeeding a second portion having an agent region and a sealing region. The agent region is configured to house the agent during breastfeeding and has a first cross-sectional area. The sealing region has a second cross-sectional area at least great enough to surround and engage a circumference of the nipple but less than the first cross-sectional area. When the device is positioned on the breast and the child is breastfeeding, the device is configured such that the nipple extends through the sealing region into the agent region and the portion of the delivery device at the sealing region contacts the nipple, thereby reducing or preventing the flow of breast milk and/or the agent through the sealing region to the first portion.

  • Patent number: 6440100
Abstract: A concealed apparatus for hands free breast milk pumping and storage includes one or more low profile nipple caps held in place beneath a support brassiere. The system permits concealed, hands free breast pumping in a public environment without any remarkable change in the user's visible appearance. Milk is expressed from the breasts through novel, low profile nipple caps linked to a reservoir via a milk storage conduit. A vacuum is applied to the storage reservoir by any suitable means such as an electric or manual vacuum pump. Suction is thus conveyed through related system components to express milk from the breasts and draw it into the storage reservoir, while being essentially unobserved by others.

  • Patent number: 6287521
Abstract: Non-invasive methods are provided for obtaining biological samples of mammary fluid or mammary fluid components by administering oxytocin to a patient to stimulate expression of mammary fluid. During or after mammary fluid expression, a biological sample is collected in the form of whole mammary fluid, whole cells or cellular components, other selected liquid or solid fractions of the mammary fluid, purified or bulk proteins, glycoproteins, peptides, nucleotides or other desired Constituents of mammary fluid. Methods and kits are also provided for determining the presence or amount of a breast disease marker in biological samples of mammary fluid or mammary fluid components obtained according to the above sample collection methods. Also provided within the invention are novel breast pump and breast pump adapter devices which incorporate a solid phase sample collection medium integrated within the breast pump or adapter or otherwise fluidly connected therewith.

  • Patent number: 6109100
Abstract: A feeding monitor system provides data responsive to a human or animal subject sucking on a nipple or other outlet connected to a supply of feeding fluid stored in a reservoir. A hollow chamber provided in between the reservoir and the outlet includes a pressure sensor and/or a fluid flow meter to provide electronic monitoring signals. These signals can be amplified or otherwise conditioned for display, transmission or storage, e.g. in digital form. The invention has wide application, including without limitation use in a neo-natal intensive care environment for diagnosis and screening of disease and disability, assessment of different feeding systems including nipple characteristics, gauging strength and oropharyngeal function, and evaluating response to therapy for feeding difficulties of infants.

  • Patent number: 5891165
Abstract: A liquid dispensing infant pacifier has a mouth guard with a hollow tubular connector portion on its rear side over an opening extending through the mouth guard from its rear side to its front side. The connector has a configuration similar to that of a catheter hub and is selectively and removably connectable to either the interiorly threaded discharge end of a conventional liquid dispensing syringe or a closure cap portion of the pacifier which serves to block fluid flow through the connector portion. Projecting outwardly from the front side of the mouth guard, over the opening therein, is a specially designed double-walled tubular nipple which is formed from a partially everted pliable material tube and has a large interior flow space extending outwardly through the open front end of the nipple body.

  • Patent number: 5843029
Abstract: A manual breast pump adapted for one-handed operation includes a pump body defining an inlet, an outlet and a vacuum port, a stationary handle connected to the pump body, and a movable handle connected to the manual breast pump and spaced from the stationary handle so that both handles can be grasped simultaneously between the palm and fingers of a hand. The movable handle is movable with respect to the stationary handle and is operably connected to a piston disposed within the pumping chamber so that movement of the movable handle with respect to the stationary handle results in movement of the piston within the pumping chamber to create a vacuum at the vacuum port. The invention provides a manual breast pump which can be easily and comfortably supported and operated using one hand.

Abstract: Non-invasive methods and kits are provided for obtaining biological samples of mammary fluid or mammary fluid components by administering oxytocin or an oxytocin analogue to a mammalian patient to stimulate expression of mammary fluid. The oxytocin is preferably administered intranasally and causes myoepithelial contraction of target alveolar-ductal tissues of the breast. Methods and kits are also provided for determining the presence or amount of a breast disease marker in biological samples of mammary fluid or mammary fluid components.

  • Patent number: 5520613
Abstract: A device for expanding the connective fatty tissue and correcting inverted nipples and improving symmetry of the human breast by means of gentle suction generated by respiratory means. The hollow dome is constructed of tinted, low-density, polyethylene which enables the user to monitor the degree of expansion she desires. The surrounding rim assures an air tight seal with the skin tissue. The pliable, high tensile quality of the hollow dome allows the user to squeeze and change the shape of the hollow dome on various locations on the breast to uplift and improve cleavage. A threaded nipple extends from top center of the exterior of the hollow dome which is attached to a pliable breathing tube and is fitted with a removable mouthpiece to facilitate orally evacuating the air surrounding the breast. A valve-timer controls the input and output of atmospheric pressure which creates a vacuum around the breast, and can be maintained for a selected number of seconds and minutes by the individual needs of the user.

  • Patent number: 5238655
Abstract: A blood sample collection apparatus includes a removable plug adapted to fit within the open end of a blood collection tube. A vacuum tube extends through the plug for evacuating air from the collection tube. A pickup tube protrudes outwardly from the plug for supplying blood to a drop tube extending downwardly from the plug with its lower end positioned within the collection tube substantially below the lower end of the vacuum tube. A primary filter is sealed against the underside of the plug to filter the air drawn through the vacuum tube by a portable hand-held vacuum source. The primary filter is a hydrophobic microporous membrane operative to allow airflow therethrough but to block liquid flow therethrough. A secondary filter is operatively interposed between the vacuum tube and he vacuum source for increased safety. Installation of the secondary filter bypasses a bleeder port which renders the apparatus inoperative in the absence of the secondary filter.
