Abstract: A medical suturing implement which greatly improves manipulability and operability is provided. In a suturing implement, the movement of an operating part is transferred with a time differential to a loop forming part and suture thread by a loop feeding/returning mechanism and a suture thread feeding mechanism, and after the loop is fed out from the tip end of a loop introduction needle, the suture thread is fed out from the tip end of a suture thread introduction needle.

Abstract: An apparatus and method for forming retainers on a continuous strand such as, for example, of suture material and a suture produced by the same. The apparatus may include a retainer forming member configured to rotate about a first axis. The retainer forming member may include a cutter, the cutting edge of which may directed substantially inward toward, or outward away from, the first axis to define a retainer forming zone when the retainer forming member rotates about the first axis. The apparatus may further include a support member arranged adjacent to the retainer forming member and configured to receive and support the continuous strand in the retainer forming zone. When the retainer forming member rotates about the first axis, the passing strand may be intermittently or continuously cut by the cutting edge of the cutter.

Abstract: A suture system spool is configured to retain suture having a suture diameter and tension the suture between a distal and proximal end portions of a suturing tool. The spool includes a monolithically formed disc defining a central opening that provides the disc with an inside diameter. The disc includes a base and a flap joined with the base at the inside diameter, and the flap extends from the inside diameter to an outer periphery of the disc to define a cavity between the flap and the base. The flap is spaced away from the base at a location between the inside diameter and the outer periphery of the disc by a factor of at least two times the suture diameter, and the flap is spaced away from the base at the outer periphery of the disc by a distance that is approximately equal to the suture diameter.

Abstract: Suture passing devices that may be used in both open and endoscopic surgical procedures and that are designed to continuously deploy suture. The surgical device is provided with a handle assembly including an actuator in communication with a pair of advancement wheels and a built-in spool of suture (with a long length of material that can be fed through tissue and cut at desired locations). By moving the actuator linearly, the advancement wheels rotate, causing the spool to rotate and advance the suture through a shaft of the instrument to the tissue to be sutured, in a continuous manner.
