    Abstract: Provided herein is an article of manufacture that includes a stop member having an upper surface and a lower surface, a blade extending upwardly from the upper surface of the stop member, and a handle attachment member extending downwardly from the lower surface of the stop member. The blade includes two sharp edges each having first and second ends and two blunt edges each having first and second ends. The first ends of the sharp edges meet at a point and extend away from the point at an angle of 90° or less, and the first ends of the two blunt edges extend downwardly from the second ends of the two sharp edges. The angle formed between the corresponding sharp edges and blunt edges is obtuse, and the second ends of the two blunt edges are connected to the stop member.

In a first example embodiment, the cap displacement mechanism includes a cantilevered spring arm that displaces the detached cap of the active lancet. In a second example embodiment, the cap displacement mechanism includes a spring-biased cam-driven plunger that displaces the detached cap of the active lancet. Then an activation mechanism releases the energized active lancet to traverse the unobstructed lancing stroke path to pierce the subject's skin at a desired lancing site.

A flexible support member couples the penetrating members to define a linear array.     Abstract: A blood collection system for collecting blood from a body part for diagnostic purposes, comprising a housing with a lancet guide, by which a lancet is guided on a predetermined puncture path, and a lancet drive for driving a puncturing movement of the lancet on the predetermined puncture path. The puncturing movement comprises a forward movement phase in the direction of puncturing and, after reaching a reversal point, a subsequent retraction movement phase in the direction opposite the puncture direction. The system comprises an oscillation control device for controlling oscillation of the lancet and the driving spring in such a manner that repeated puncturing of the body part by the lancet is prevented.

A free-floating drive spring is provided for moving the needle assembly from its cocked position to its striking position. A trigger bar has a first position wherein it holds the needle assembly in its cocked position, and the trigger bar has a second position wherein it allows the needle assembly to move to its striking position as the drive spring expands.

Alternatively, a test strip can be slid through a slot formed in the bottom end of the device so that by passing the device against the skin after an incision has been formed, the test strip will directly contact body fluid emanating from the incision.
