  • Patent number: 6804971
Abstract: Disclosed are an apparatus and a method for controlling a plurality of compressors of an air conditioner. The apparatus comprises a counter, a timer, and a controller. The counter serves to count the number of times of operations/stoppages of the plural compressors according to loads. The timer serves to sense a time taken for the plural compressors to be operated/stopped a designated number of times counted by the counter. The controller serves to control the operations of the plural compressors based on the time sensed by the timer. The apparatus senses the time taken for the plural compressors to be operated/stopped the designated number of times, and determines whether or not a load is eliminated based on the sensed time, thereby properly controlling the operations of the compressors. Accordingly, the apparatus of the present invention reduces the consumption of power and increases air conditioning efficiency of the compressors.

  • Patent number: 6772599
Abstract: A control system is provided to maintain stable operating conditions for centrifugal compressors operating in parallel when one of the centrifugal compressors enters into an unstable operating condition. The control system determines an unstable operating condition in response to signals indicating the motor current or power consumption of each compressor and the position of the pre-rotation vanes of the compressors. Once an unstable operating condition is determined, the control system closes the pre-rotation vanes to each compressor until the unstable operating condition has been corrected.

Abstract: Outside air is treated to remove moisture before it enters the conditioned air space of a store or other building containing refrigeration furniture. The sensible air temperature and relative humidity measurements are taken to allow microprocessor calculations of the wet bulb temperature. A pair of unequal sized compressors of the HVAC system are then cycled in stages for peak efficiency and minimum compressor horsepower usage for low cost operation and minimal energy consumption both of the HVAC system and the refrigeration furniture. The wet bulb temperature is converged by the microprocessor which iterates a known polynomial approximately every 6 seconds to derive the wet bulb temperature. A time delay circuitry set at approximately 30 minutes prevents unnecessary staging of the compressors.

Abstract: An automatic control system of the invention comprises a plurality of liquid chillers, a principal controller, and a plurality of secondary controllers respectively connected to the liquid chillers and the principal controller. The automatic control system stores a British Thermal Unit (BTU) table that includes a predetermined high load limit parameter and a predetermined low load limit parameter varying according to the number of liquid chillers in operation. The principal controller compares an actual load of the currently operating liquid chillers with the high and/or low load limit parameter to determine an adequate number of liquid chillers that have to be operated. By evaluating the number of liquid chillers currently operating, the principal controller then determines whether liquid chillers have to be switched on or switched off through the secondary controllers.

The room temperature varying during the waiting time for the re-operation of the compressors maintained at a stopped state is sensed to determine whether or not an increase in cooling load occurs. Based on the amount of the cooling load, it is determined whether the compressors have to operate simultaneously or selectively. That is, the refrigerant compression capacity of the air conditioning system is determined by reflecting the cooling load caused by a variation in room temperature occurring during the waiting time for re-operation taken until any compressor maintained in a stopped state is re-operated.

Abstract: A system is provided for monitoring the food product and refrigeration system performance of a remote location. The system includes a management center in communication with a remote location through a communications network. The management center receives performance information of the remote location with respect to operational parameters of components of a refrigeration system of the remote location, and temperature data, at which food product has been stored. The management center utilizes software modules to analyze the performance information and provide alarms for scenarios such as food safety and quality issues, failure of a component of the refrigeration system or preventative maintenance for components of the refrigeration system. A third party computer may also communicate with the management center and the remote location for reviewing performance information.

Abstract: To provide chilled water, a variable-primary-flow system includes two variable speed pumps that pump water through a first chiller and a second chiller. A control energizes the second chiller in response to a cooling demand exceeding that what can be met by the first chiller operating alone, and de-energizes the second chiller upon the cooling demand decreasing to a level below the first chiller's maximum capacity. When both chillers are operating, the capacities of the chillers are modulated in unison to meet the cooling demand. Likewise, when both pumps are running, their speed is modulated in unison to provide a desired pressure.

Abstract: An air conditioning apparatus and control method thereof is provided, in which a pulse width modulation compressor and a two-stage variable-capacity compressor are connected in parallel with each other to control capacities of the two compressors according to indoor air conditioning loads. The air conditioning apparatus is cost-competitive because a capacity supplied by the pulse width modulation compressor is relatively low in cost, and the cost required for manufacturing the compressor is reduced in proportion to the reduced capacity. Accordingly, with the air-conditioning apparatus an effect is obtainable in which a variable-capacity compressor with small capacity and a two-stage variable-capacity compressor with large capacity are controlled as if a large-scale variable-capacity compressor with a same capacity as a total capacity of the two compressors were linearly controlled.

Abstract: Disclosed are an apparatus for preventing an overload of an air conditioner and a method thereof. The apparatus includes current feedback units for feeding back the currents supplied to the compressors to the controller where at least one of a plurality of compressors, operated in response to currents generated from a controller for controlling an operation of the air conditioner, is in an overload state; and a comparator for sensing current differences between the currents inputted into the compressors and the currents fed back from the current feedback units. After sensing the current differences between the currents inputted into the compressors and the currents fed back from the current feedback units, the comparator determines that at least one of the compressors is in the overload state if a current difference does not exist.

Abstract: A control unit for variable displacement compressors is used for two independent air conditioning cycles, wherein two compressors 1, 11 driven by a common external drive source 8 include electromagnetic displacement control valves 6, 16, respectively. By controlling these control valves by ECU 7, the displacement of the compressor is variable. When the air temperature is higher than a predetermined temperature To, both of the compressors are subjected to the variable displacement operation even though one of them is unnecessary for the air conditioning operation. On the contrary, if the outer air temperature is lower than the predetermined temperature, only one compressor, needed for the air conditioning operation, is subjected to the variable displacement operation, while the other compressor is subjected to the minimum displacement operation.

Compressors of the refrigeration system each have a bus compatible compressor safety and control module including a processor and sensors. All control and safety modules communicate over a single power and communications line with the controller, providing digital transmissions to the controller of measurements taken by the sensors. The information provided may include that the compressor is outside of a specific safety parameter, so that the controller knows not only that a safety parameter has been traversed, but exactly which one. The control and safety modules are capable of executing commands from the controller to cycle the compressors. Therefore, as compared with conventional air conditioning systems, a period of time required for the address setting and an error occurrence probability can be reduced and the convenience to the user can be increased. Furthermore, the address setting can automatically be conducted without additionally using separate hardware modules, thereby reducing parts costs required in manufacturing a multi-air conditioner.
